The free version doesn't let you choose when you want it to update, so if you're not online at the right time it doesn't auto-update. You can just click on the icon thing in the taskbar and update from there, takes all of about 5 seconds.

Mine auto-updates in the morning (Korea time).

I always found it scary that Norton would kill by my or my dad's computer sometimes when it downloaded a bad set of virus definitions. Granted, we were on dial-up back home, so I imagine there are more chances to get errors.

Our computers would literally lock us out of windows until we went into the safe mode and turned off the virus scanner. He'd have to wait for the next set of definitions (usually a day or two) before he could turn the virus program back on again.

Never had such troubles with any other virus program but Norton.

I believe that we unanimously agreed that Norton is a virus.

I have had absolutely no problems with Norton, and am continuing to use it until my subscription expires. It uses a lot of resources, but I can spare them right now. It has caught a few things and my system is and has been virus free since I built it.

The reason I am against Norton is because it does use a lot of resources which some people can't afford, and so many users have issues with it.

I simply consider myself lucky with it thus far. On my second and third systems, I am running AVG and it seems to be good. This is what I will move to when Norton finally runs out.

I liked the free AVG too, but it's been about a year since I tried it, I think. Back then, your free subscription ran out after maybe 1 to 3 months. I'm enjoying Avast these days, so no need to change. I feel Avast is less noticable, which I like, but I'm sure AVG probably had some stealth settings I didn't get into in the short time I had it.

So, Derrek have you managed to solve the irritation of the popup and audio accompaniment for "Virus Database has been Updated"? If so, share the wisdom. I can't find a setting to remove the audio prompt anywhere. Scared the hell out of us on more than one occasion when we've had the pc volume up high... certainly more noticeable than anything I've ever run before.

I guess I didn't find it that bothersome, since it pops up in the lower right corner the same size as an MSN ad. The thing that bugs me are the big "update" windows that a lot of virus checkers drop smack-dab in the middle of your screen. Hate those. Avast doesn't do that.

oh, saint... there is a "disable Avast sounds" checkbox under the program settings/sounds section.

Derrek... cool thanks. I can't think why I never saw that option before...

it was the sound that was driving me crazy. The popup is okay

Cheers

Big ups for AVG. I put it on the computer at work, instead of the Korean antivirus which is kind of useless to me. The school's network has been shut down several times lately because of so many viruses on it,but my computer hasn't been infected even once.

I'm normally a fan of Free Version AVG but, recently, I noticed it can't automatically update from the server.

You can tell because your little icon in the taskbar goes monochrome.

I think you can do it manually from the website (I never had to because it was able to update itself 1 or 2 days later).

Just a little flaw in an otherwise nice AV.

Eamo: Did you try double-clicking the monochrome icon in the taskbar, and then clicking 'Check For Updates' on the left-hand side (under 'Test Centre' and 'Help Topics')? I'm not being sarcastic... just asking.

I'm also a fan of AVG - have used it on several computers and found it to be great.

Tried that and pressed the internet button to update. It trys for a minute but can't connect to the Grisoft server. A few hours later it seems to have done it automatically. So no real problem.

This has only happened twice in two years of using AVG. And the program has always caught up with the updates within 24 hours.

Excellent thread. I was wondering how to protect my Kaspersky virus.

Reading some of the info in this thread (subscription running out, time when program will update, etc.) almost makes me think I'm running an entirely different program- I've had none of these issues with AVG.
