don't want to haul my laptop through three rainy se asian countries before i finally get to canada.
i am going to fed-ex or ups it home but does anyone know how much it will cost and what i need to do to package it?
do they just handle the actual puter or do they pack the case, cables, etc. all together with it?

Just seal it in plastic and wrap it with bubble wrap and take it with you.

Other than that I know nothing.

I had the same problem last year when I stopped ofg in Thailand on my way to Canada. I did not want to caryy my laptop around or worry about it being to tempting to other.

I sent mine off by UPS/ I had me ex-boss wait for several weeks and then send it along to Canada - I paid the costs before I left of course. He phoned up and got the price. However, he mentioned in passing that maybe I should carry my receipt with me in case I needed it.

Great advice!! They refused to release it from Custom unless I could produce the receipt to show it was purchased in Canada. I faxed the copy off and next day it was delivered by UPS. Still wonder what the result would have been if I tried to tell them that I was considered a non-resident of Canada and they had no right to question my personal possessions on my visit to Canada - just like any Korean visitor.

So my advice is 1) you might need a receipt for release at Customs
and, 2) make sure someone will be there to open the door to the UPs or answer any Customs queries.

I second vdowd's experience about claiming the laptop from customs.

I sent mine home (for under-warranty repairs) and had it couriered to my father. He spent 2 days arguing with customs to have my laptop released.

He had all original receipts of purchase from when I bought it in Canada, and the documentation from Dell saying that it was scheduled to be serviced that week, everything complete with serial numbers, etc etc.

He eventually got it, but it was a nightmare.

I wrapped it up in a few layers of bubble wrap, plus enough foam chips to fill the box in a cushion all around it, and I think I wrapped it in a few towels or something as well, maybe it was newspaper, I can't remember. Anyway, it travelled fine.
