lets say immigration busts an agency and that agency gives them all kinds of info on me. what can immigration do about it now if i worked illegally several months ago? (which i would never do of course because it is illegal). Are they looking for those who are working now? or would they come after those who havent done it in a while, butdid do it say... a few months ago?
any more news on the crackdown? are they busting people out there? i havent heard much. is there any rhyme or reason to the heat being turned up right now? how hot is it? |

1- It is still going on.
2- they are busting people and it is normal we do not hear about it constantly.
3- The reason for the crackdown seems to have been government pressure because of the report on illegal teachers. The problem of illegal teachers was portrayed badly in the media but it remains a real and bad problem that needs to be adressed. This is what immigration is doing, addressing the issue. |

I would never go to another country and knowingly break the law. No matter how minor it may seem to me.
Immigration problems within the ESL industry exists partly because of illegal foreign teachers.
When I hear or see a FT teaching illegally...I have absolutely qualms about turning them in. None at all!

I find it more unfortunate that the " law" in this country seems to be regarded by many Koreans that I have met as " just a guideline" for them to behave. To quote a Korean friend " we know it's wrong but we still do it anyway" when refering to running red lights and the fact that a foreigner got killed in the process. Remember it's okay for Koreans to break the law here, they can often buy their way out anyway. I have little respect for the rights and wrongs of this situation. Maybe the government should focus on crackdowns against the corruption and bribery that takes place every day here by Koreans. Bring on Mr. Real...  |

Yes it is illegal, but the VISA system is flawed and needs to be changed so that teachers are not endentured to their employer. The Japanese system, while not perfect, is infinitely better than the Korean one.
Immigration is not addressing the illegals situation, they are addressing a bad PR situation. |

Because they have quotas to meet on this one, before they release the crackdown results to the press. Cracking down on the agencies that recruit for privates and the teachers that they enlist is a great way to get those numbers en masse, because it requires less rocks for them to look under. This whole thing will be officially winding down when they release the overall numbers to the press, like in every past crackdown that they've ever done in every other illegal aspect of Korean society that received bad press. Rest assured that no less than 10 teachers here will start threads with a link to the article on the crackdown results, as soon as it hits the net. Until that time, sit on your hands and wait. |

If you are working with an agency at the moment you are an idiot....quit, trust me there will be a job for you there when this all winds down...probably by end of August which is the end of the summer camp season when plenty will be caught and quotas met...the government wanted the quotas met by the end of the summer
As Chronic said quotas have to be meet...nothing has changed, just that immigration have to make numbers and this is the easiest way to do it....
BTW...privates are illegal, don't do them....of course  |
