I was in Hollywood's in Itaewon (above Spy club) saturday night and a bunch of people started leaving the bar at once. One guy said to me its because they wouldn't let in their Nigerian friend and "*beep* those racists." Anybody got the word on this? If its true, I'm not going there until the ban is lifted. But I like the place well enough, so I don't wanna jump the gun. |

Who cares? At least you weren't hit by a car while trying to jump over a puddle. |

It's true, always has been. The late Barry started it because they don't drink enough. |

It's all very well boycotting the place, but if the bar was full of Nigerians then most of us wouldn't go there, certainly not with our girlfriends anyway. Sometimes bar owners are damned if they do, damned if they don't. |

This same thread came up a month or two ago, remember? But it was for a different business.
The reason given by a worker at one of the places boycotting was something like: They buy one drink, stay all day, and harass the girls. We've had too many complaints.
I'm seeing a common theme. |

You are assuming the people here 1. Care, 2. Are not racist, and 3. Hollywood doesnt have a good reason.
After Star Wars 3, you would think people would know better than to disrupt the force. Lets assume that Hollywoods motivations are purely racist, and that the ESL teachers here boycott Hollywood in solidarity with the Nigerians, and go further to assume that it actually works and Hollywood changes its policy.
The ripples in the force you set in place can have unexpected consequences. Hollywood, now known as the most 'Nigerian friendly' bar in Seoul, is wall to wall with Nigerians every weekend. Inevitably, the atmosphere has changed and most of the Korean girls that ESL teachers liked to pick up there have stopped coming, and the Nigerian guys are a poor substitute for ESLers seeking 'companionship'.

I don't think letting Nigerian people into a bar automatically converts it into the most Nigerian-friendly place in the world. And like the guy before me said, every bar that lets in Nigerians isn't automatically wall-to-wall with them. Based on the bars that do have a lot of Nigerians in them, I don't see Hollywood as being a big draw for the Nigerian community.
And how English teachers find their companionship isn't really my business.
I'm not the Martin Luther King of Itaewon. I'm not even the Al Sharpton of Itaewon. I'm not gonna organize any big boycott. I just don't go to places that ban people from certain countries. That's my policy and I'm not gonna get on my high horse about it. You guys can do what you want. But after all the moaning, whining, crying, bitching, complaining, ranting, and venting about Korean racism towards white folk, I just thought people on this forum might care a little more.

Even were I to venture into Hollywood I would not give a monkey's toss whether there were Nigerians in there or not.
I have spent quite a lot of time in Nigeria and in my view thay are the most racist people on earth.
But one poster above had it right - they spend no money and hence hog tables that could be earning money. It's a business after all.
You wanna go somewhere else, do so. Unless you are a big spender the owner will not even wave farewell. |
