Depends on your definition of "successful". Has he achieved anything? Carter is a talker who's only talent is showing up at the right times to make himself look good. He's not a leader of humans.

Ummmm....Habitat for Humanity comes to mind; his work with Ford on various commissions; the requests from dozens of foreign countries for him to come in and observe elections to ensure fairness;

Maybe you don't respect him but the general consensus of millions is that he is a man of integrity and worthy of respect.

But you are entitled to your opinion.

Re-read what you just wrote. Key words are "commissions" and "observe". You've demonstrated that he's got his name associated with a good brand, Habitat for Humanity. What has he *done*, though? Let's talk dollars.

built a bunch of houses. He just doesn't do that crap for photo ops. Why such a cynic?? Carter might have been somewhat inept as a President, but he is a good man. Nothing in his life says otherwise.

He devotes a week of every year to building houses:

HFH Bio

That week of work has been documented on a PBS Show:

Your House

This year he and his wife worked in Detroit:

Habitat in Detroit

Yeah, he won the Nobel Peace Prize for just showing up at photo-ops. Rolling Eyes

It is odd, isn't it? I always thought it was because the people who opposed Polk's war, like Thoreau and Lincoln, ended up more famous than him. They kind of stole his thundar, is my guess.

yeah, that's true, but i think andy jackson pre-emptively stole a bit of his thundar as well. i think a lot of people (possibly even himself) saw him as a second andrew jackson (young hickory), but without the wild hair or the flair. i read his diary. pretty dry stuff. he was like my father in a supermarket... make a list. get it done. get out.

Have to admit, the only thing I know about Polk is the Mexican-American war. And I'm undecided as to whether that was a good thing. Also, in the old Apple II game "Oregon Trail" he's the president who writes you a letter if your wagon train successfully arrives in Oregon.
