Example: Purple Novel School

If I want to search for information about this school on this forum, I type 'Purple Novel School' into the search field. And then it lists every thread that includes 'purple' and 'novel' and 'school' somewhere in the thread but not necessarily together. I've tried, "Purple Novel School," which is the way I would search on google, for instance. This does not provide different results, however.

Is there some way I can search more efficiently on this forum, if I only want to read threads containing exactly, "Purple Novel School" in the posts, instead of reading about a 'purple' monster that read a 'novel' in 'school'?

(Am I making sense?)

Hey Merrilee,

I've been having the exact same problem. I am also still in North America, trying to find a contract, and I want to use the search function to research the schools with which I am in contact. It is especially annoying if the school happens to have the words "English" or "School" in its title. I've tried quotation marks, and I've tried using the AND function, but neither seems to work. I'm gonna offer up a prayer to Dave in this message...

DAVE....WE ARE NEWBIES HAVING A PROBLEM WITH THE SEARCH FUNCTION...CAN YOU HELP US, PLEASE!!

Maybe that will work.
Cheers.

You could also try limiting your search to a particular forum. If you are looking for a school limit it to the job discussion forum or Q&A. Also be sure to read all the options and choose the best one for you.

You could also check the FAQ. Link is at the top of the page.

"Purple Novel School" was simply a fictitious example for the purpose of generalizing my question.

Em's legitimate example of "English School" illustrated my point exactly.

Kimcheeking- good idea about limiting forums.

Yep, I know what you are talking about, Merrilee.

Say that you are trying to look up "Yes English School". You type it in and ask for all terms and you get every thread that has a post in it that uses the words Yes, English, and School. There are tonnes of posts that have the words School and English, and the word yes is used alot too. So you were looking for something really specific and you have to comb through an awful lot of threads - and often don't find what you were looking for. Crying or Very sad

What the search function on Dave's needs is the quotation mark function that you find on most advanced search functions. Putting quotation marks around several words ensures that you are only shown results that contain those words in that order (ie: "Yes English School", not "Yes, I think English should be taught in school). That is what Merrilee and I are looking for - it would make it much easier for people to utilize the wealth of information on the forum - and help keep good people out of bad schools!!!!

I have a BBboard on my personal site. As the administrator I can tell you that the quote function is not possible. BB-board just doesn't give you that ability. I agree that it would be great though.

Ahhh. Well, combing can bring up some unexpected surprises. And this forum is great, even without quotation marks!! Wink

Thanks Kimcheeking!

I know it sometimes appears that people (and often newbies) are scolded for not using the search function... but we (scolders, wrist slappers etc.) really only do that when we try the search function and immediately find the information that answsers the OP's question or know that that the same question has been posted on on the same page.

If you do try using the search function and you can't find your question, please don't hesitate to post your own thread. It's also helpful to us if you tell us that you've tried the search engine but it hasn't answered your question.

We don't want people to shy away from asking a question or posting a new thread just because they're scared of being scolded for not using the search engine.
