Yep, bacteria. They say something like millions of humans died years and years ago from the same bacteria but evolution has allowed us to become immune. The aliens are new to our world and they arent immune like us.

Make sense?

And I guess M. Night Shymalan didn't read H.G. Wells because his aliens in Signs were even dumber.

They should make a porno version where the aliens are very sexy and aren't immune to semen.

That movie sucked sausage. Plain and simple. A rape of the original story

Gotta love the hand grenades!

Where were the friggin animals in this movie! Can't make a good movie without PETA gettin' involved. When was the last time any movie was made where any animals were mamed and killed.

Not sure if it was part of the book, but a few horses or cows slaughtered by aliens would have made the movie more realistic.

I liked everything except the aliens. First of all, their faces looked exactly like the aliens in "independence day". Second of all, I seem to recall that the aliens in the first movie (though I was very young when I last saw it) were supposed to be "weird" somehow... not human-shaped and human-sized with a taste for peanut butter.

PS: was the soldier in the cage Boba Fett? i couldn't tell, i might have to watch it again

Bit of a let down. I don't mean the ending only, just all of it.

Dakota Fanning playing her usual neurotic child-adult was consistantly annoying.

My rating...... Watchable.

Everything about my War of The Worlds experience was annoying. As a claustraphode I just about went looney being jammed into an elevator with 30 or so Koreans. Not only did it turn out my timing was off I had to leave the building come back again later, because I realized that when I brought the ticket it was for 4:50, and not 3:40.

Back down the jam packed elevator I went. Spending a bit of time at a pc bahn playing video games was annoying. The counter, girls while impressively endowed in the chest regions, seemed to insist I go sit in the smoking section. Getting up and simply walking over to the non smoking section took care of that bother.

Going back to the move in another jam packed elevator I found out I was 10 minutes late due to stopping on every single floor from the 3rd Basement all they way to the theater on the tenth floor, all in a jam packed elevator.

Hopefully the first ten minutes were pointless like the rest of the movie so I can feel that I did not miss squat. Having two girls running in and out of the row I was sitting in three or four times for some oddball reason involving a soft drink nearly made me pile drive one of them. The same could be said for the two brats behind me jabbering away the whole time. That was until I turned around glared at them for about a minute, and told them to shut up.

Now on to the movie, one can clearly see my mood was lower than a snake's belly in a wagon rut. The movie itself sucked. The only scene I liked was when they were running through the forest and it was raining clothes. That was just freaky.

Oh btw when I tried to zip out the fire exit to avoid the crowd it was locked, and I was plastered against the door by a crowd of girls who found out the same thing, but seemed to thing if they shoved against the door with all their might it would pop open, with little consideration for the fact that I was pinned to the door.

BTW I really do like Koreans, but I think I am gonna avoid the theater in the future. Or at least one that I have to take an elevator up ten floors.

PS> WAr of the worlds while sucky was much better than Assault of Precint 1. That was a horrible movie.

I enjoyed the movie a ton. Was the first movie in a while to scare me. I liked it much more than Batman, which was incredibly cheesy at times (the whole monk/cult thing).

Very well done. I agree totally with Bulsajo about the horn sound and people freaking with nowhere to go.

Definately worth seeing in a theater -- better without a bunch of Koreans who can't stop playing with their handphones during the flick!

One nice thing though, one of my former students was working at coffee store in the theater. She gave me and my date free coffee!!

I've never read the book The War of the Worlds, but I did once listen to the 1937 (?) radio play by Orson Welles. I found the movie was very similar to the radio play, in that midway through the story you get the sense of someone living in a time of complete collapse of all civilization. (In the radio play the lead character is holed up in the basement of a burned-out house as well.) The opening scenes when the aliens first arrive are interesting as well. Not the typical buildup you would normally expect; almost the plot of Independence Day set in the opening scenes of Mystic River.

War of the Worlds almost seems like a mixture of horror movie and SF. Perhaps the original story is like that, I don't know. That scene where Dakota Fanning is down by the river, and sees a body go by...and a few seconds later, several dozen bodies float by, is terrific/horrific. That scene at the train crossing, where the bell begins to ring and the crossing guard comes down...only to have a train completely on fire, racing past, was so surreal. That and the plane wreckage, all seem to contribute to this sense of a total collapse of everything, all civilization, into chaos. In retrospect I'm a little surprised that Steven Spielberg included the plane wreckage shots in the movie; they seem to cut a little close to 911. All in all I thought it was a well-done movie, that seemed to stick pretty close to the original story. It was not your run-of-the-mill summer disaster flick.

Yeah, that train scene was really freaky. Very interesting. Never seen anything like that before, and it was that fact that made it so cool.

Yes, the aliens looked too much like the aliens from Independence Day (gosh, can you believe that movie is nearing 10 years old!?!).

Also, the use of "normal" looking people throughout WOTW added to the realism.

I had to watch that stupid racist anti-Japan flick again before the movie, though. Low class. Very low class.

I thought Batman was much better.

I watched this with my GF at the theatre the day it came out and we both left the place unimpressed.

The lightening storms were cool and so was Tim Robbins. That's about it.
What was the deal with his son? They invest half the movie in this supposedly 'difficult' relationship with his son, but completely blow it off for what reason?

The 'Aliens' looked like something ripped from the original star wars. The ending was unsatisfactory and was delivered with no impact whatsoever....BUT, by that time I think everyone in our theatre felt that their 2 hour investment was sufficient, nobody wanted to sit through another 15 minutes of this tripefest so it was just as well that they ended it as abruptly as they did.

Go see Batman or Madagascar, they're both worth the won.

Yeah, the movie was lacking a lot. I wasn't very impressed. The aliens looked just like the aliens in ID4. What was up with that? The tripods and death rays were pretty neat but it would have been nice to see a bit more destruction. Lets see New York raised.

The bit where everyone was crowding around that first hole. Wouldn't people have run away long before the tripod came out? Everyone just keeps standing there while there's pretty much an earthquake going on.

Why don't aliens just go to the asteroid belt, grab a bunch of asteroids and smash them into earth. They've waited a million years. Why not wait an extra 20 for 99% of humanity to die out from the environmental destruction caused by 20 dinosaur killers?

Is it possible aliens could be so stupid as not to plan against germs? This was the plot of the original, but our understanding of evolution has grown. It's pretty unlikely life would begin without first there being a lot of bacteria. And on any world, not all bacteria would be benign to the locals.

Why did they bury war machines millions of years before there were any people on earth? Who did they think they had to defeat before there were people?

Are they eating people? Is that what they're doing? If people were their food why were they killing them in large numbers? What's the deal with the blood vines?

Tom Cruise really sucked in this movie.
