I finished Teen Talk 1 months ago and my students begged me to not order the 2nd book (I found the first writeup and the questions were ok but the sample opinions, dialogues and other stuff was useless). I liked it however because it was one of the few free talking books that wasn't incredibly difficult. Now I teach from newspaper articles, which are much more difficult for the students. 90% of the students have no idea what's happening although they seem to like it more and my boss likes it so much she wants me to do it in other classes as well Unfortunately for me it's a lot more work so I'm wondering if there is any book similar in level to the Teen Talk books that anyone uses and likes that I can supplement my classes with. |

| I had a hard time with "Teen Talk" and felt like the "issues" were like ABC After-School Specials. What worked better, with some alteration based on the age of the students, was "Express Yourself 1." I also like "Let's Argue," which has Korean controversies expressed in English. |

I agree some of the issues I don't want to use, especially the "read and discuss" asides between topics. That "love is not sex, sex is not love" one really irks me, it's too preachy. The opinions in the topics are OK, as the book states they are intentionally biased views, hopefully to inspire the students to disagree verbally.
I realize the book works with one of my classes because the students know me and are willing to converse with me. My boss made the mistake of assuming that another class with "the same English level" should use the same book... this class is totally shy and the book is useless for them.
I also like Express Yourself. That whole series looks good to me.
Has anybody had good luck with "Talk Talk Talk"? |
