Sorry, I'm with Grotto here. My first hagwon stuck me with the 150.000 bill for a drum of oil 3 days after I arrived....after not telling me the tank was practically empty and I would have no hot water or heat in the middle of December. I didnt' complain too much, except for the lack of notice and info.
Now, when I moved out, we agreed that the boss would pay me back for the unused portions of everything I had paid for and he would pass the bill along to the next person. Granted, it wasn't an exact science and I was probably generous by rounding down on how much I used so I didn't get everything back, but it was cool.
The hook-up fees, you should definitely get back. No way that shouldn't be paid by the school.
And ken, you're comparison of 150.000 or more in oil and toilet paper is just ridiculous. They're two completely different things. But yes, if he were leaving behind any large items, I might try to work something out.
But hey, that's just my opinion.

Hey Ken. Did you hear me ask for money back for the 18 rolls of TP that will be in the apartment when I leave? Or dishsoap, laundry detergent, cleaning supplies etc? No you didnt and I have no problem leaving things like that behind for the next teacher.
What I am demanding is that the utilities that I have not used but have already paid for be reimbursed, the hook-up fees that I paid last year because I had a severely retarded Korean monkey of a co-teacher pissing around whose favorite phrases were:
You must be more Korean!!!
You should pay! You should pay!!
After a first month of absolute hell I said the hell with it, I will get the money back later. I asked several times during the last semester but she never even passed on the request to the admin.
Like I said though my ass is covered, I am not going to pay the 160,000won + in bills that will accumulate between the months of July and August.
So if they pay me the money I will pay my bills and everything will be hunky dory. If they dont pay me the money they owe me I will leave behind lots of bills and everything will not be hunky dory. I will still be out a few bucks but I wont be shafted as bad as I would if I paid all the bills and took it up the tailpipe for the utilities as well.
There were 100 teachers in the GEPIK program and I was the only one who was forced to pay hookup fees.
Lets put it this way....Koreans are stupid when it comes to matters of common sense. |

No you definitely weren't. I think most of us paid for hook-up fees. I am positive that many of us did. I even had to pay half of the landlord and apartment fees and utillities for half of August 2004 because that's when the school started renting it for me. I could have argued that I owed nothing before my contract start date, but it seemed fair enough to me. As for phone and internet (and cable if I'd gotten it), KT has English customer service people so I hooked it up with no help from the school and the bills even get debited from my bank account. It's in your contract that you're responsible for all costs associated with living in the apartment. The school is only responsible for supplying the apartment itself and furnishing it.
I do agree that the school should be buying some of the oil from you. In fairness, they should probably give you 100,000 won because you probably won't be that accurate about how much is leftover. They could pay you and get the new teacher to pay them. If they won't agree then your only hope is to politely ask the new teacher to pay you back for it. If I were the new teacher I'd want you to cancel your phone, internet and cable so I wouldn't risk being stuck with your bills so you might be out of luck there.

| Why would you buy a full drum of oil if you are leaving soon? That clearly is a decision lackin common sense. I agree with your other points but the oil? Sorry, your SOL there. |

| That seems to me to be the way it usually works. You're going to come off looking cheap, but if you're leaving for good, you probably don't care. When leaving a similar situation, I decided not to buy oil or LPG in my last month and bathed with water heated in the microwave for a few weeks. |

Now that is hard core. Me? I'm out in the sticks too, but I'll damned if I'm buying any oil when I have a gym membership and can shower there. |

Yeah I guess I should have thought it through a bit more. Like I said though I have no compunctions of leaving behind two months worth of cable, internet, electricity and telephone bills.
They want to screw me over they will quickly find out its a double threaded screw
Oooh I didnt get paid for the oil...tsk tsk thats too bad. Oh by the way I didnt pay my bills for the last 2 months so we're even. LOL |

Well the school has agreed to pay me a grand total of 200,000 won for the hookups and the oil.
Who says being stubborn as a mule doesnt pay off?
All it took was threatening to tell the world that the school was stealing my money and that the principal was stealing my money.
Half an hour later 20 nice crisp manwon in an envelope are in my hand. |

On the other hand, if you weren't such a grumpy old mule, maybe that might actually like you and you wouldn't have to pull teeth to get them to do stuff like that for you. Aren't you the guy who said never, never do a favor for your Korean boss? Haven't you time and again pointed out how stupid you think Koreans are? Do you think maybe they have some idea what you really think about them? Is it possible they may have detected your condescending attitude? Maybe they just like giving you a hard time because they think you're a whatever.
Anyway, you got what you wanted. Congratulations. Its too bad you couldn't go home with more pleasant memories. |

Perhaps you arent familiar with the entire tale. The co-teacher I have right now is pretty good. The co-teacher I had last semester was a stupid racist Korean sow.
Now stupid racist Korean sow refused to do her job, refused to ask her higher ups about things and refused to do anything properly. After 3 months of banging my head against the wall I gave up on stupid sow.
I have alot of respect for the teachers that I work with. I dont have respect for their English skills though. I get along well with the staff here and strangely enough I am well liked....despite my grumpy gruff dwemeanor.
I will leave this school with many good memories.
But this thread proves that sometimes you really have to dig your heals in, slap on your armor, hone your axe and prepare for bloody war just to get what is rightfully yours. Or you could be an apologist or jellyfish and walk out with nothing...ultimately the choice is an individual one! |
