Hi guys,
I'm making a list of books which are helpful for teaching, understanding korea, kids reading, anything really. If people are up for helping we could create quite a good base of information...
So, here is what I have so far:
About Korea:
Korea Unmasked (4/5 gives a good perspective into Korean life)
Conversation:
Small Group Discussion Topics for Korean High School Students and Beginners [Jack Martire] (Unknown as I've not used it yet but clear topics interesting questions, excellent breakdown of difficult vocab and translations into Korean in the back so it looks great!)
Let's Argue: 20 Korean Controversies [LIS Korea] (HARD and risque on some topics, but looks good for my teachers class)
Student Reading:
Oxford Readers: (3/5, I find their grades are pretty limiting when teaching middle school (i.e. only grade 1 books can be used) and the stories seem quite old.)
Puffin Young Readers (4/5, Personally I think better grading of difficulty and a wider selection of books (film tie ins, some newer books such as Matilda) ensuring interest is pretty high.
Manga Comics [Fruit Basket] (5/5 translated from Japanese into English DOES mean you have the odd sentence which will make even the native speaker scratch their head. Also the difficulty is high. So why 5/5? Simply cause middle school girls LOVE Manga. Upon showing the books to the kids I had 10 girls ask for it in the first day. So it may not be the most effective reading tool, but its EXCELLENT at motivating the kids to read a little, and its also a good tool for lessons)
Others I think would go well:
Jigsaw Jones (Simple murder mysteries coupled with the story on tape. Not cheap (7500w) but a listening exercise too)
Charlottes Web
Winnie the Pooh
Roald Dahl (the shorter ones Georges Marvelous Medicine, The Twits, Fantastic Mr Fox)
Things I'd like know more about:
Teaching "theory" books dealing with ways to engage students with ESL learning.
A book with good games
A good coursebook (I like Cutting Edge, but only from flicking through it)
ANY teaching book geared to teaching Korean students specifically.
So stick your book reccommendations up, in any format you like. It'd be useful for us noobs who are overwhelmed with the choice and the huge variation in quality found in the ESL sector.
Thanks!
