Well since my school had it's MT I thought I'd share it with the rest of Daves. MT, or membership training, is an end of term chance to get together eat and drink a lot. Generally you won't be told about it. If you want to go, ask one of your minders about it. If you don't, play dumb and when you get told, have other plans.

I like my school so I went along. First they took us on a bus int the middle of nowhere. We started with a light lunch.

Then after that our bus had a flat tire as we attempted to go some dead writers house. So we set off on foot for 30 minutes in the blistering summer heat.

The writers house.

Next stop the beach. We had about 30 minutes of walking around before:

Round two. More food to eat.

And of course soju to drink.

Various men will do the rounds you are expected to have a drink of whatever it is they offer you. Smart teachers either hide the drink or immediately throw it up.

Is he alive?

More soju related casulaties.

Of course no bus ride is complete without Bus Karaoke. Have a song the teachers know and you'll be popular. I sung dancing queen.

Dancing on a moving bus is never a good idea.

Because our school is adjuma central this wasn't an overnighter and we were back by ten. If you have a lot of male teachers you maybe overnighting somewhere.

The end.

Seeing all that makes the thought of my new job - the only foreigner at a small high school - look so much more appealing. Really. It would sure beat a hogwan company dinner consisting of the supervisor getting really drunk, then depressed and crying; the other KT Christian fundamentalist teachers scared to touch a drop; and trying to prevent a fight between two of the other foreign teachers.

You call it "Membership Training?" I call it "Mountain Training" or "Mihn-bahk Training." Wink Anyway, looks like you guys had a good time. I was asked to attend ours as well, at the last moment and on a Saturday. I went as they are pretty good people and they don't stress me too much. It was actually quite good. We had some kick-ass duck after some even better seafood juhn-gohl in the middle of nowhere. I was a bit saddened that not many people were drinking. It was the first time that I had dong-dong-joo ladled into my cup from a bucket rather than swigging it from the bottle so it was okay. I had another appointment so I didn't stick around for round two if there was one. I shuddered when I saw that no-rae-bus. Aren't those things supposed to be illegal?!? Good (and funny) pics.

Nice documentation. Picture, 1000 words, etc, & reminded me of the expedition I undertook when I first got into my position.

Everyone piled into a chartered bus (the luggage compartment was filled with booze) & we did a cross-country 2-day blur of drunkenness, quick tourist events, nice restaurants, & yes, bus-dancing, which is illegal, but when did that ever stop anything in Korea?

It was a lot of fun but once was enough -- I've quietly ducked out since.
