Good question. I am interested in getting one myself, but I am pretty sure that fluency in the local tongue would be a prerequisite, and possibly even citizenship.

It depends what country you are from.

Citizens of some countries can just show up and show their license and get issued a Korean one. Citizens of other countries have to take the test.

Got my DL 4 years ago. Showed my valid North Carolina DL, took an eye test, silly physical test (2 deep knee bends) and paid 15,000 won. In and out of the office in 30 minutes. Oh yea, had to give them 2 photos.

You don't need a license if you're white.

I went through the same thing a few years back (minus the deep knee bends - and, gosh-darn it, I had been working out so I could nail three of them and, in doing, become a god in the awestruck eyes of the locals). At the time I remember a rumor about there being a new law about to take effect that would require a written test....but I don't know if that was more than a rumor or not.

i don't want to be rude, but why don't you try searching the site before asking questions? or using google: type in driver's license seoul and you get this link:http://english.seoul.go.kr/residents/transport/trans_07driv_01.html

Unfortunately, the process has changed for Americans. We now have to take a written test.

To the OP:

Go to the official website for the Korean Driver's License Agency (http://www.dla.go.kr/eng/main.jsp). Find the office closest to you and call them to make an appointment. If you are American, you will go in one time to fill out paperwork and take the 'physical.' Then, they will make another appointment for you to come back to take the written test. It is 20 questions and is mostly common sense, but there is an English manual that you can buy for 10,000 won if you want to study (I'll sell you mine for 5,000 Wink ). Assuming you pass, you'll get your license on the spot. Oh, and be sure to bring your Alien card and license from home.

If you're not American, chances are you won't have to take the test, in which case you can take care of everything in one trip (I know this applies to Canadians and Australians right now...don't know about anyone else).

Good luck and happy driving.

Some people don't mind helping others here. I frequently search this site for issues such as these, and this thread could easily become a useful thread in the future. ESLcafe is a search engline...

every question is answered on the internent!
its just more fun to ask it here, gives someone something read, gives someone something to respond too.. etc..
i dont care seeing the same question asked every couple of monthsa its also good to know what people are up too etc..

I don't have a UK driving license. Is it possible to take the test here?

I'm not sure exactly when. I got my license back in March and I know it had been a relatively recent change.

Yeah... 9 years is a bit random. I meant why not 10? For that matter, why not 7 and 5/8? Odd.

I don't know. Check the link I provided above and it might answer your question. If they do, you'd probably have to take a driver's training course... I can't imagine that'd be much fun here...
