This isn't another anti-microsoft rant or anything, but I think just about everybody and their dog knows that IE (without service packs) currently runs with more holes in it than a kilo of swiss cheese.

Considering the huge number of malware, spyware etc... that's out on the web, why do most PC bangs use IE as their web browser ?

Surely firefox or opera or some other browser would take care of a whole lot of computer problems for these guys ?

You should know well enough that Korean business people don't give a hoot about good service (most of the time), they care about making the most money out of the smallest investment of time, money, and upkeep. PC bang owners couldn't care less if their computers aren't secure as long as there are customers sitting in front of them.

Well not just crappy PC Bangs use IE. Fortune 500 companies and corps all use MS. IE owns like 90% of the browser market...it's not the best bet, and IE really does suck, but it's the only sure one.

I gave up on Firefox and went back to IE. I had a problem that no one else seemd to have and for which I could find no solution, so I said *beep* it and put my faith in my AV s/w.

The problem had to do with graphics on many pages (including this forum), graphics (especially .gifs) wouldn't show up in the right place, or the right size (for example on Dave's the banner ad would be a giant stretched out emoticon and the all thread icons on the forum lists would be 'thread locked' icons...) I tried a bunch of different things, uninstalled and re-installed, and in the end it was worth spending any more time on it.

FF just seemed to be a smarter bet in terms of lessening potential threat, but IE had never given me any problems before and it gives me less problems now than Firefox.

Back when I was using pcBangs I talked with the owner of the one I frequented and he told me taht they reinstalled windows on every computer one every 60 days. and then installed the most popular games. Why worry about security when you're just going to reinstall everything anyhow.

Honestly, who cares? I would never do anything remotely sensitive (even checking e-mail) in one of those places (keystroke loggers) and heck....it's not my computer, so if it gets a bunch of web bugs....whatever.

They use it because it's Korea, and follow the flock is the go here. As was said before, Korean sites are made for IE anyhow and the general level of awareness about internet safety/security here is low.

well, ya, it's not just the security issue that got me thinking about it.

Firstly I much prefer using firefox, if only because I find the tab function (File -> New tab) really useful, especially in PC bangs where they don't have a IE shortcut. It saves me from opening up loads of browsers as I surf. I usually surf with at least 4 pages open at a time so I can switch to another one while I wait for something to download

Apart from all that however, all that malware can really hit the performance of a computer as well as the user experience. I mean something simple like this may save them trouble in the long run.

I gave up using internet explorer ages ago. I rarely fire it up and when I do it is for Korean sites that are often built for explorer. I dislke Korean sites generally because they are often very badly made and confusing, with loads of pop up nonsense.

Why PC bangs use it is probably because they can't be bothered to install anything else.

I love Mozilla and it works on 99% of sites perfectly. Mozilla is more or less identical to IE but is much better for downloads, seems to be a lot more secure and the tabbed browser thing is great, you can even bookmark groups of tabs.

One word 'laziness'.

Personally, I find it just as fast to right-click the link and choose "open in a new XXX"...tab or window.

I don't surf with one hand on the keyboard and one on the mouse....surfing is a right-handed affair while the left is busy feeding myself or drinking coffee....

Keyboard "shortcuts" are actually more time-consuming sometimes. They are useful when the mouse is on the fritz.... The only one I use regulary is to open a new window.
