This is a totally random rantling......
I realize that everyone from the states is a Yank but my poor mother reads this board and is "simply appalled" that she would be considered a (insert gasp) YANKEE....
Mama is from Greenville S.C. and mama does not like being called a (insert additional gasp)Yank or yankee.
It pains my dear mother that y'all could confuse the southerners with yankees. Please note that I explained this to her many times and that depending on the situation it is not always an insult.
I promised said mother I would mention this and I have done my duty. Please feel free to ignore this rantling.
BTW I am supposed to mention that S.C. was the first state to secede from the union and that Jefferson Davis WAS a president.
And the south shall rise again....

I was under the impression from my Louisiana wife that your mother is right.
On that subject on behalf of me dad, not everyone from the NE of England is a Geordie. |

Tell your mom that Brits were calling Americans yankees way before the southerners started using it for northerners. You know the song "Yankee Doodle", right? That song was actually a lyrical coup on the previously derogatory term. It's like feminists who adopt the b*tch label in order to dull the epithet's blades.
I'm not 100% confident about what I just said, so, Mom, now's your chance to do some etymology homework! |

You are 100% correct on this sir.
"Yankee Doodle Dandy" was written up to embrace a previously derogatory term and thumb their noses at the British. Maybe we waegukins should do the same and rewrite the Korean song "Mr Monkey".

Well of course she doesn't but.. however...she will then lean over and explain how the Northern Aggressors fired upon Ft. Sumter (in S.C.) first. And how Jefferson Davis is mistreated in the history books.
Yes the yanks won the war but if you ever go down south you will think it happened last week.
Just letting you know that some of us Rebs just ain't no Yankee ya hear!
