Teacher, you are greedy because you have something I don't. Teacher you are greedy because you won't share your lunch that you paid for with your own money. Teacher you are greedy because you didn't buy the whole class ice-cream when you got some for yourself. Teacher you are greedy because you won't give me stickers even when do a crap job on my school work. Teacher you are greedy because you won't give me money to buy junk food with.
Tell ya what...I'll share my lunch AND my money when we are neighbors in your luxury condo complex and your parents and I have matching black Equus' and a Rexton for my wife. When I make 10 million Won a month babysitting what's most precious to your parents like they do and when what's most precious to me doesn't have to live in a 18 pyung efficiency then let's talk about communism, egalitarianism, and sharing.
Until then...va te faire foudre a sa cul, petit putain de salop.
News flash: working in Kangnam doesn't make you less conscious of your low status as a white monkey babysitter. |

It should be "Va te faire foutre p'tit cul, espece de salope", but that sounds so darn frenchy, I much prefer my native Quebec's slanders:
"Manges d'la marde mon osti de crisse de chien sale puant pis decrisse avant que j'te crisse une volee en pleine face, tabarnak!"
Ahh, that feels good. |

Wow, that's pretty sad buddy...do you work for 1.8 million too? My point about a kid's perspective (yes, I know they're only kids) was regarding some pretty sharp 11-year olds who regularly have anywhere from 20 to 40 bucks of walking around money. I wasn't making a point about teachers being greedy so much as how selective the Korean virtue of sharing can be.

Children, can't educate them, but you sure can beat them.
It's obvious that many parents don't take any time to sit down with their children and actually teach them anything. Send them to school, hagwon, ajuma maid. So typical here. You do realize that this will come back to bite parents on the rear, actually already has. These children grow up, but only physically. Mentally, it'll be still "Mommy, Daddy, give me everything."
When you meet children here who have manners, are well behaved, then please give them some encouragement for that.
PT, next time the kid brings ANYTHING into class, jump on them about how greedy THEY are. Then beat them with a stick... |

I pondered on this while working in China, over there the kids are all from single child homes, so generally they are really spoilt, providing they come from a wealthy family, which my students did.
The traits these kids displayed the most was selfishness with each other, 'no you cant use my eraser' 'this is my candy'.
I have noticed the same here but to a lesser extent, I think it's a product of a smaller family with parents that produce on demand that causes this behavior.
So when someone else has something that a child that is used to getting what he/she wants whenever they want it, is told no, it starts a s hitstorm. |

My kids have learned not to ask me to share anything I am eating or drinking. I tell them that they have to pay me with a kiss. *cue the fake retching noise*
At another hagwon, I had a group of girls who regularly begged for my dinner, which was usually a sandwich. I'd say, sure, just a sec, and then I'd lick the entire thing. Works well with anything you are eating, actually....stops the begging INSTANTLY and they tend to turn away in disgust, thus leaving you in peace to eat your food in your alloted five minute break. |

Uh, guys, have you ever noticed that when people eat in Korea they ALWAYS share? Why, the food is even served in a way that requires sharing. It is rude of you to eat in front of others without sharing.
We criticize the kids for lack of manners, and then, by their standards, we are rude as hell and don't understand why they are confused and upset.
Sorry, about this little rant, but I have been teaching camp for a couple of weeks now. The kids always say please and thank you. When I let them go get ice cream the other day, they brought one back for me. I didn't really want it, but they were so pleased to see me loving it.
Yes, these are the spoilt little rich ones- their parents are doctors, dentists and professors. They share incredibly well, and their teamwork is great- much better than I could ever hope to expect from American kids (the kids where you come from may indeed be angels ). At the end of the week, I give prizes for points accumulated during the week. The prizes are so inconsequential that an American kid of the same class would sneer- they are so happy and applaud for each other when they win.
I am guessing that most of you never taught anyplace else, especially in the West. |
