anyone know??

finally italy. when are you going?

i haven't heard much luck with the card - a law making it unlikely for foreigners to withdraw money from korean bank accounts.

i wire $ to the U.S. and then withdraw with the home bank account.

anyway I told the guy I will want this card to work abroad so I can get money out from ATMS as koreans can...

he says please hold... then says im sorry no!

then he says you can try for INWORLD card.. I asked him if that will work he said I dont know check with your KEB.. im like ummm you are the online keb rep!!! umm yes but im sorry.. hahahah man I love this country!! hahahaha

so well all these expat cards sound sweet and I will get one for here!
but this is not helping me with my travel plans!!
I guess I will just use my girls card make it simple...

There have been a few threads about credit cards. Most banks are junk. If you want a credit card, fill in an application for Samsung Card. You should be able to get one without too much hassle. The KEB cards are also an option. The Expat card is 120,000 a year but comes with a bunch of good discounts (you have to make more than 2.0mil/month). However -- if you don't want to pay the crazy fee they're asking for, they have a bunch of other credit cards that they will gladly issue to you, no matter what you make. The only major thing you lose is service in English.

I have been a customer of Citibank for a while. The are NOT the most competent bunch. When you do transactions with them double check everything they do. I transfered quite a bit of money out of the country, and even though I gave them the transfer instructions printed out from the Net they managed to fool it up twice. The first time the money was "lost" for a month. The second time I was able to catch the error before the receiving bank returned the money for the second time. Just watch them. I find the staff (I deal with the one at Banpo) to be rather arrogant in thinking that they know everything, and really know very little.

Regarding the original question. I set up an International
ATM card with Citibank. They initially told me I could not do so. I had printed out the information from their website. Once they read that foreign residents could indeed have an international care, they issued me one. However, the first time I tried to use it in Thailand it would not work. On my return I paid them a visit, and they did the set-up again. The next time I was in Thailand it did work, and I also used it in Egypt.

I have used my Woori bank international card in Canada, Thailand, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Egypt and Dubai with no problems. If the first machine does not work try another. Sometimes the functioning of ATM's also seems to depend on the time zone.

I also found that when I was in Canada that I could only use my Korean credit card at a Bank of Montreal ATM. I have no idea why.

A good rule of thumb is to have a back up ATM card, in case the first on doesn't work.

Good luck.

I have an international ATM card from Woori, which I have used many times out of country. I have just checked it. There is NO expiry date on the card. There isn't a date anywhere.

Now, I have checked the Citibank card, and there is an expiry date. I guess I'll have to see what happens.

I have two other international cards from other Korean banks, and there is NO expiry dates on these cards.

It sounds like the people working at these banks have no idea............but
what else is new????

I've used my CHB card throughout Europe and the US. Never had a problem....well, ok...once when it demagnetized, but hey! That can happen any time!

I think the problem is that you're asking for the wrong kind of card. Banks don't usually understand "debit card" the way we do. Tell them you need to use the card when you go abroad. CHB has 2 kinds of cards: blue for in-country only and orange for international use.

Good luck!

I've been told this, too, but they always backed down. Go to the bank and look mean.

I have an account at finebank. I went last week and got an international debit card. It will only work at ATM's but they told me it will work internationally. It has the Maestro and Cirrus symbol on the back. Try them.
