I just bought a new laptop online for around $1600. I had it sent to my family in the States, and they're going to send it to me, using global express mail...I don't mind paying a little tax, but 20% of $1600 is almost 340,000 won....

If I have them take it out of the original package, describe it as "used" and "for business use only", do you think they also need to write down the value as being way less -> like, $500 or so?

I don't mind lying, but it seems that if anything bad happens to it during shipping, then they'll only reimburse me $500...

Has anyone done this before without actually paying the full rate?

thanks for any suggestions....

Just get a letter from your school stating that it is for educational purposes and their will be no duties.

Ok, what do you do with that letter once the school writes it?

Email a copy to the people that are going to sell your lappy. Just have a phone number of your school on it, tell the shipper to attach it to your packadge.

i went through a similar ordeal when importing my p2 from America. Man....all I can say is.....suck up the import cost...or.....have you family pack that bad boy in a box that is completely surrounded with feathers and styrofoam peanuts. Wrap the laptop itself in waterproof material. When I say waterproof....I MEAN WATERPROOF. I had one package get to me a little wet. THankfully the stuff was wrapped. Good luck! Smile
