Detroit, hmmm....my handy dandy googling tells me you are in luck. There is a Korean consulate in Detroit.
Why not look in your white pages to find the phone number and give them a call. They can answer your questions with far more accuracy than anyone here can.
Here's the address:
Korean Consulate - DETROIT
40400 E. ANN ARBOR RD., PLYMOUTH 48170
Honorary Consulate OF KOREA |

Notorization process at Vancouver Korean consulate.
Walk in, request notorization, give degree, photocopy degree, sign and stamp degree, done.
It took 5 minutes when I went to get it done |

I'm in a similar position and need things done quickly, plus I don't have much time. I just sent my original degree since it was much easier, but also because when I graduated I ordered 2 copies of it.......Could you send it and then get another degree from your university?
I''m not really sure about the process about getting it notarized...sorry. |

If you have already been accepted for the position then stop fretting. It is much easier and cheaper for them to keep you even if you cant start until after that date (or it it the cut off date to apply?).
My boss told me his absolute latest starting date was April 30... I told him I had an important event to go to and I couldnt get there til May 3rd and that was fine. Then my visa wasnt ready until the 7th so I didnt leave until the 8th.... they need us more then we need them it seems.
Also if you dont have 2 original degree certificates, then get copies and have them notorised. It can save a LOT of hassle later on if you school turns out to be bogus. (They often like to keep your degree and then if you quit, they conveniently 'lose' it so you cant apply for another job).
Notorising my degree took 4 days but that was only because I sent all the documents in the mail, but I was told if I turn up in person they will have it done on the same day.
Keep in mind though, I am not from the US.... |

This is from the Korean Embassy in Ottawa's website:

2. Required Documents for the Certification of Degrees :
• Original Diploma
• Notarized diploma (can get this done at a public notary office)
• A copy of transcripts (must be stamped and sealed by the corresponding university)
• $2.60 per degree in cash or money order only
• It takes minimun 24 hours to process |

BTW, there is no consulate general in Detroit, only an honorary consulate so you probably need to mail your documents to Chicago's consulate. |

Why not just take a train to Chicago? |

That's an option. It's only 11 to 12 hours round-trip by train or bus. Fare would be $60 for bus, $120 for train. |
