I'll have to re-check my balance tomorrow, but it appears I got ripped off W100,000 at a cash machine - at least that's what my balance is showing now. It gave me two reciepts, the first stating a withdrawal and the second with some sort of error code on it. Hopefully the ABM has an internal record of breaking down in the middle of my transaction, and I should be able to get a Korean friend to help me call the bank, etc.
What I'm wondering is if anyone else has experience dealing with this. The machine sounded like it was in the process of counting the cash when it broke down. Any advice from others who have dealt with this would be appreciated. |

It happened to me once about 2 years ago. I took the receipt in, got the bank manager, and he re-deposited the funds right then.
It should not be any problem but it is frustrating |

I'm always having cash machines failing to uphold their part of the money-withdrawing transaction. But I never know what the balance of my account is 
I did try to check this out once though when I got an error message, I'd just arrived in Korea and I was never able to figure out if I'd been robbed or not.
If this sort of thing really goes on, then I'm going to be a hell of alot more careful next-time I go near my atm. |

Strangely it used to happen to me in the UK but not here.... I am weary, too because I don't particularly trust Korean banks..  |

So you ACTUALLY trust banks , just not Korean ones??
Haha, they're all scammers!!! Wouldn't trust any, here or back home! |

I worked briefly as an armoured car guard in Canada servicing bank machines, and yes, it does happen occasionally - but only when a machine breaks down as it's counting the bank notes. Once in a blue moon a guard makes a mistake like mixing up the $5 and $20 bills, and that really creates some funny mayhem. I think that most newer machines have the technology to stop this, though.
My favourite scenario was when an angry customer was still waiting at a bank machine trying to get his card back, which we weren't supposed to return. We'd make up some story that after the machine eats it, it slides down into a vault we can't access. Of course all we have to do is unlock the plastic lid (which you can often do with a screwdriver) and retrieve it from the card slot. If someone's being a real a$$hole waiting for you to fix a broken down machine and it's serviced from the back with CCTV in the service room, you can bring up the machine, watch him put his card in, and then shut it down again so the machine eats his card. ...maybe what happened to me yesterday was just long overdue karma.

| I got ripped off a couple of hundred dollars using my VISA card for a cash advance (a couple of years ago now...)... One night I tried three times to get a cash advance of 100,000 won (I'm an idiot.. Shoulda just gone to find another machine)... Each of the three times it had said that the transaction couldn't be completed due to an error of some sort (and no receipt stating this particular error)... A month or so later I got my VISA statement stating that I had in fact received cash on all three of those tries... Of course, I didn't, but not having any transaction slips to prove anything, I was, well, f-ed... Live and learn... I do know that KEB is a safe place to withdraw money on a foreign credit card (VISA, anyway)... |
