I have an upper middle school class whose English is pretty advanced and they are clamoring for ghost stories (they call them "horror stories" but same difference) as they have got in the habit of telling them in Korean. Every time I come into the classroom the lights are off and a girl named Sunny has the group in thrall with her dramatic and spooky tales.

Long story short, they made me promise some English ghost stories, but I'm having trouble coming up with ones with language simple enough to be compelling and dramatic in a dark classroom (obviously no reading or flash cards in this lesson!). I tried to adapt Poe's "tell tale heart" b/c that's the only thing I could think of on the spot.

So, please give me some ghost stories!

Spooky urban legends would go well,

The babysitter (the guy who rings the house is upstairs in the kids bedroom)
The car one (with the bloke leaving the car and the killer hangs him above it, when the girl drives off she kills him by accident)
The dog one (girl sleeps with dog, hears noise and puts her hand down to see if its there, gets fingers licked, so goes back to sleep. Wakes up the next day to find dog dead and on the wall in blood the message "Humans can lick too!"
The other dog one (grannie dries dog in microwave... POP)
Cola + poprocks (makes peoples stomach explode)

Google urban legends and there are loads more. Or watch the film which i quite liked Very Happy

Are these boys or girls? My kids (girls middle school) havent ever shown interest but inotice that 1/2 the films released seem to be horror!0

Oh, this one is bringing back nightmares from summer camp. I remember the counsellor telling it to us as we were going to bed, his face illuminated by a flickering flashlight, then leaving us to fall asleep in our cabin while he went to hang out with the other counsellors. I think he called it 'The Maniac' ... 'the maniac licks hands too!'. In his version a woman was going out camping in a cabin by herself and as she's heading up the mountain she hears a news report on the radio that an infamous killer has just escaped from a nearby prison. Since there happened to be a prison not that far from our summer camp it was especially effective. Be sure to turn the lights out if you use it.

Wow I just did a lesson plan on urban legends and told many of those. The one about the dog licking the girl's fingers is a good one. Also dog related, the chocking Doberman (woman comes home, finds her dog chocking, she takes it to the vet, leaves it here, goes home, the vet calls and tells her to GET OUT OF THE HOUSE NOW, she runs out of the house just as the cops come pulling up, they search the house and find a killer hiding in the closet, nursing a bleeding hand minus some fingers... the dog was chocking on human fingers) and the mexican pet (a woman buys a little dog in mexico, it gets sick, she takes it to the vet, and finds out its a large sewer rat).

Just told this one to my kids. A man picks up a woman hitchhiker and takes her home, where she invites him in to thank him and meet her kids and husband. He gets out of the car, she's gone. The husband gets furious with him because she killed the kids and committed suicide years go, but people are always coming to the house saying they just drove her home.
