It is the whole image which you have to buy into and not the quality of music.

I guess that depends on what your requirements are from music. When I put my headphones on during long train trips, personally I'm not looking to consume an image. I want good songs with good melodies & arrangements, etc... A few K-pop songs have this. Very very few.

Korean popular music seems - and I know how arrogant this is sounding, but I don't care - immature. They're about 40 years behind in their development. I think they need a Korean Beatles - a group of supremely gifted songwriters and musicians - to advance local music in the same way the Beatles ushered in those massive changes from 1963 to 1970.

But as long as they're big on copying (the Japanese), and not innovating, this isn't going to happen any time soon.

I have no claim to pretension, I know very little about music, but if you really are enjoying your Korean experience and in your 20's or early 30's and get out and about in the night scene, then there is no way in hell you haven't had some memory linked to K-pop songs.

Man, I know what you are talking about. The song "Pan" (even though I forget the signer's name Embarassed ) reminds me so much of last year....having Korean friends sing it in Norebang, hearing it on the streets, it's just a very catchy song. And some musical purist that I know may cringe at this, but I do happen to like "Kimbab" by the Jadu as well. Very Happy Twisted Evil

Anyways, here is something else entirely....let's think of this: If you were ever going to put out a soundtrack for your time here, what would you put on it? I know for me, I would have a few songs from U2's "All That You Can't Leave Behind": Walk On, Stuck in a Moment, Beautiful Day, and I would have the aforementioned K-pop songs....oh hell, I would have a lot of K-pop in there, and I need to come up with a better list!
I agree with Weatherman, even if the song is stylistically crap, and may or may not be a rehash of another more famous Western song, some of the songs, by being so easily digestible and fluffy will remind me of the good times I have had here and most likely remind me of being silly in a norebang (my friends sang Kimbab and Again To Me tonight when we went. I tried to keep up...) Wink or acting silly with a friend when we watched a Korean drama just for the hot actor in it.

Is it true that songs sung in Japanese can not be broadcast on South Korean radio or has that law changed?
Also, does anyone know where I can find a list of what is not allowed to be broadcast on South Korean radio?

Slightly off topic...but aren't the "born on the streets of Kangnam" tough guy wannabee rappers annoying?

How about the rapper dude who always acts so tough but now is barred from coming back to Korea cuz he illegally avoided his military service...what a joke. Even Elvis didn't pull a stunt like that.

The bigger joke with that guy is that he claimed to be moving to the U.S. because he was certain to become a big star there.

Yoo who?

As far as I know, that's still true. Just like the law prohibiting Honda dealerships.

Then there's the 1998 rule, which I think is still in effect, that bans Korean performers from singing their songs in English on Korean television. And then there's the one from the same period that prohibited them from wearing sunglasses because they set a "bad example"...

Well....

Last night I watched some of the Korean pop to find out what you guys were on about. I don't watch TV much except for the news (my wife is into the dramas like Inoagashi so I study). Anyways, First song I started to get an understanding of the majority here that dislike it when....

Oh MY GOD it was a korean version of the Macarena (갈랄라)(kallala).

Gave the remote back to my wife and picked up a book before I needed to go and get a bucket....

NEVER AGAIN Mad

*cough cough rip off cough*

I cannot even count how many tunes Koreans steal, er, borrow from western songs. And THEN they say "No no! It's Korean! You take from us!"

HAHAHA

Um, no buddy. "Axel F" was made for the movies Beverley Hills Cop (I, II, III) not for your laughable excuse for rap music.

And the song's "And Then I Got High" tune stolen, er, borrowed...

The list is almost endless...

yeah...some of the korean hip-hop is weak (but so is some American and even worse...european hip-hop. haha), but there are some dope groups out there...they even got ties with some american hip-hop acts like Xzibit, Mobb Deep etc. So not all of its bad.

The guy that's not allowed to come back to korea is Yoo Seung Joon. He decided to become an American citizen and drop his Korean citizenship. As of now, he is not allowed to come back to Korea. Kinda of a wierd rule, since there are a lot of Korean-Americans who are still Korean citizens who are avoiding joining the army by only staying in Korea for 60 days.

Funny how you go into a bar or whatever and if you stay awhile you are bound to hear an X-Japan song...most of my friends with MP3 players also have their songs...so while you aren't going to hear them on the radio, I guess the law is just for the radio, as I have never heard of a bar getting busted by the Ministry of Culture for playing a Japanese song.

Let's make a list!
I'd love to have a list of every ripped-off song by Korean pop stars. Anyone that can "name that tune" please post them here.

Remember during the World Cup--right after the Italy game, there was a story in the headlines about some Italian group ripping off some Korean pop song, or something of that nature. The angle of the of media was massive indignation---How dare they!
What a joke!

Everyone list identified Korean musical rip-offs please.

I keep hearing Korean songs and then I say to myself, "Hey, I know that tune from somewhere . . . that's from that one song back in the eighties . . . "

Korean pop is just one big rip-off, just like every other single part of life that you come into contact with over here: the capital of the world for intellectual property violations.

Dr. Buck...I'll bite Very Happy

I know that Wax did a "remake" of "She Bop" by Cyndi Lauper and I think was called "Oppah" or soemthing like that.
Today at a store I heard a song that sounded quite a bit like Ricky Martin's "She Bangs." LOL
There have to be others, but I can't think of any now.

Westlife recorded a version of their song Flying Without Wings with Boa. I like how she croons, "when you find that SPECIAR PRACE"

oughta have worked on her pronunciation a little longer.

there are too many to list. but then again, at least the korean groups somewhat change the song. i love some of the british groups that remake a song that was somewhat popular in the US 11 years ago (ie: SugarBabes-"Freak Like Me") and make it sound exactly the same.
