On another note, my boss told me yesterday that according to the lunar calendar, fall is here. Yay! I guess that explains the much cooler nights we've been having.

It isn't the lunar calendar, but the traditional 24 seasons the year is divided into, it is a Korean thing, and it is based on the solar calendar believe it or not. Fall began Aug. 7th., but not forget, on this system springs begins some where in Febuary.

Korea does have a good four season year, but why & how they think it is the olny perfic four seasons in the world is beyond me. The differances in the seasons length bewtween the south coast and the north forests of Beak-do Sun are amazing. Koreans blowing it out of their ass again.

He SAID lunar calendar.......and he comes from a very strong buddhist background, so I imagine he's pretty familiar with the lunar calendar.

You're here to keep everyone happy and get paid.
There are certain topics in Korea that are intractacbe. No compromising whatsoever.
"You want the truth, You can't handle the truth"
Foreigners can't use chopsticks, Korea has the most perfect weather, Dokdo is Korean, East Sea, Korea has the spiciest and best food in the world. Discussing these topics here with many people here is like talking to a robot. Disagreeing will cause the program to malfunction and the proverbial *beep* to hit the fan.
Just apply the same response as you would with a crazy person and nod and smile and be agreeable.

No...ROCK THE BOAT! And sink it! Don't kiss ass...tell the truth...if it needs to be told as you see it!
I tell koreans that korean food stinks! And I tell it to their faces. I tell them it's not the best or the hottest and on and on. Same with any thing else that they want to bring up stating that korea is the best....I burst their bubbles!
I also point out/praise when I agree that this or that is great in korea.
Low crime rate, good transportation, great electronic items, cars, etc..
But I don't let no B.S. slide on by just to coddle someone!
What...coddle koreans just to keep my job? Or keep friends? Or to keep the peace?
If you have to kiss ass to keep your English teaching job in korea...then you are hurting and would be hurting even in your own country!

Ok thats really helpful Rolling Eyes How do you as a freak white guy in the joke class explain that their parents are wrong?

To be honest none of the replies have answered this question with anything other than lie or dont lie. If you lie what do you say? If you dont well i know what to say but is it moraly right to tell a kid their parents, who are just following a cultural norm, are wrong but at the same time expecting the parents to pay my wages?
I made a mess of the quotes but im sure i can be forgiven as im asking a genuine question.

I'm sure this has been said before but this is not just a Korean thing. Japanese also believe that Japan is the only country with four seasons, and just as in Korea it gets repeated in school textbooks, etc. ad nauseum. The Japanese and Koreans are not so different in a lot of ways...maybe that's why they hate each other so much.

Isn't the reason they go on about 4 seasons because they're in an Asian world and a lot of Asian countries have tropical monsoon climates hence not really 4 seasons?

And of course they are only repeating what they and their parents were taught in school. Haven't we all done that.

Anyway, I'm just trying to understand strange phenomenon, but, no matter where it comes from, the best way to deal with it is to show surprise, laugh, and ask if they are really unaware that almost every country has 4 seasons. Hopefully, that'll save them some embarrassment in future encounters with westerners. They're kids, not ajossis, so there's still hope. Laughing
