Talking from experiance from more that 10 years in the IT field... I would personally only go for the following brands.
1st
Compaq
2nd
Toshiba
3rd
Dell
While RAM bus speeds and Hard drive speeds are important, most people generally overlook warranty. Thats why I choose these.
Bottom line is get the most power you can afford. Of course any new laptop you buy these days will have DDR memory, but try and go for at least 1GB of PC3200 memory. The rest is not to much consequential, lets face it... you do not buy a laptop if you are serious into games now do you? |

1. IBM Laptops
2. Panasonic Laptops
3. Asus Laptops
4. Dell
I have a 15.4 WSXGA+ (Widescreen) Geforce 6600go, 60 gig SATA, Dual Layer burner, 1.86 ghz Centrino, 1gig of pc 533 DDR2, Wireless A/B/G. (I get about 3 1/2 hours of battery life.) 3 Year Warranty. I paid just under 1.9 million won (including shiping). Oh its an ASUS and if you worked in the industry you would know that Asus is one of the best when it comes to quality. |

| I had a compaq laptop. when it worked it was fine, but the problem was it wouldn't stop working every couple of months. The first problem i had was with the moniter. had to send it back to have it repaired. then it wouldn't boot. had to send it back to have it fix and they replaced the mother board. had four more problems with it and asked for my money back which they thankfully did. I will never ever ever buy a compaq again. |

| Asus are good but it also depeneds where you are in the world if you want support from them. As for PC motherboards I only buy ASUS for my office. |

The SONY laptops are fabulous, and the screens smoke everything out there, but are priced WAY too high.
They last a long time, though. My gf's got one going on her 4th year. |

| I looked online, and I guess some of the SONY products weren't too far out of line. |

| I like the alienware line, too... however... they used to provide the best of the best of the best -- no holds barred. These days, they seem to be a bit more mainstream. Still nice, though. |

I've heard a lot of complaints by people about Alienware these days. They've slid in terms of quality. |

Why Compaq? The Compaq my work gave me back in my Seattle days was a sweet machine. However, the two consumer Compaqs I've had have fallen apart after a year of use. |
