U.S. Fighter Jet Bombs Australia Building

A U.S. Marine Corps fighter jet dropped a bomb and damaged a building in an accident at a remote military range in northern Australia, the government said Friday.

The bomb, dropped by an F/A-18 Hornet, exploded near a control tower and damaged facilities at the Delamere Air Weapons Range in the Northern Territory on Wednesday, Australia's Defense Department said. No one was injured and no details were released on the extent of the damage.

Defense Minister Robert Hill said the mishap was under investigation by both Australian and American authorities.

"We certainly regard it as a serious incident," Hill told reporters in the northern city of Darwin.

Bombing exercises have ceased at the weapons range, some 80 miles south of the town of Katherine.

"Things like this will always happen; we hope not very frequently and we hope not any more dangerously," Prime Minister John Howard told Melbourne Radio 3AW. "But the idea that you can conduct any kind of military exercise without some kind of potential for mishap is unrealistic."

The U.S. Marine contingent, which is based in Japan, was conducting an annual training exercise called Southern Frontier that involves 500 troops, 15 F/A-18 Hornets and two KC-130 Hercules aircraft.

The U.S. Marine Corps said the ordnance was a 500 pound laser-guided bomb, Australian Broadcasting Corp. reported.

Wow.

Drop a bomb on Canadian soldiers (several dead and injured (such as limbs being blown off)...take your time to acknowledge it.

Drop a bomb on an Australian building (no dead or injured, as far as I can tell by the article)...issue a statement right away.

I guess it's not good enough that Canada is the US's biggest trade partner to get any respect. I guess we have to elect a George Bush clone, like the Auzies did.

Australia is worthy of our respect. Canada... Not so much.

Ask TUM, and he will tell you that the Canadians were to blame for being bombed in Afgahnistan.

Accidents do happen.

Hank. The U.S. is the nation that is not respected very much. Who cares who you respect, as from your level, your respect doesn't really mean much. Truth is, the U.S. is not very well respected.

Why do you assume that everyone would want a green card?

Ahem, everybody wants a green card regardless of your tart quips. They truly do, truly. I also said "many" and not all since there are some of you we don't want.

Oh yes, please comment on my apology. Do you accept it or would you like to tell me to shove it?

Talking of bombing....in 1989 I remember the S.African air force used to use some parts of Zimbabwe for their training exercises. I had friends with a farm and the SAAF bombed near their dam a couple times, just for practise I guess. Kind of amusing really.

the US wasn't popular before it took out Saddam either.

In fact the US has been hated and resented since the end of the cold war.

There are some who want to make the case that people hate America because we are wonderful. That's not why we are sometimes hated - it's why we are often loved and more often emulated.

Truth is, we are not wonderful all the time. It's for those instances that we are sometimes hated. That's just the way it is.
