Have a friend that has downloaded games. I see that he is using a "cd emulator". What is up with that? Do you need a cd emulator to play downloaded games? If anyone can give me the lo' down, I would appreciate it. Thanks. Also, do you have a link to "the cd emulator" if you need one to play games. Thanks.

A CD drive emuilator or 'virtual CD drive' has many useful uses, oone of which is to trick protection software which requires the original CD to be in the CD drive whenever the game is played.
It creates a partition on your hard drive where you can load or 'mount' CD image files that the game software reads as a CD drive with a CD in it.

Virtual Daemon is one of the most popular:

I think all the instructions you need are at the Daemon Tools site but in a nutshell you install the emulator which will put an icon in the Task Manager. Right clicking it will bring you to options where you can 'mount' an image of a CD (iso or cue/bin). Your 'my computer' window or MS explorer will show it as a cd drive and you can run whatever is on (in?) the image. It's not hard to use at all.

Sorry didn't answer one of your questions- no it's not neccessary to play downloaded games, but it does depend on what kind of file you've downloaded. If you download Doom3_CD1.iso for example, then you could use an emulator or you could burn it onto a CD. Some games have the copy protect broken by using an emulator, which is the main reason you might use it for downloaded games.

right click the icon in the task manager, select mount, then locate the cue, bin, or iso file (I'm going by memory here as I don't have it installed on this machine). You could try googling for instructions as well.
