Hi,
Some Good news for me- I just got a new job teaching EAP to students entering Uni (both post and Under grad) here in Sydney.
I'm excited about this possibility and the move away from General English but I have never taught EAP before and expect that it will be a challenge.
I know that EAP is the way to go- and I'm really looking forward to this opportunity. I just want to prepare myself as much as possible.
Anyone out there have any advice: Websites? Resources? Tips? Any HELP is greatly appreciated.
Thanks so much.
Cheers,

I taught EAP at a language school in Auckland a couple of years ago. If you are into the academic side of teaching English then you will enjoy it. I did, but it was hard work making essays and presentations, etc. In addition, I had students of different levels so some of them really struggled because their English level wasn't adequate, so that was also hard.
They learn to do things like write essays (Asian students especially not used to writing essays the way we do) and reference properly, collect information such as effective note taking from lectures and articles, and give presentations.
I can't give you any resources off the top of my head as the school I taught at has developed its own course which has various topics such as tourism, communication and education. The students studied with me in the morning and then did IELTS class in the afternoon, which was a bit full-on IMO. I don't know what they do in the course now, I think they've changed it a little.
If you get students who are serious and commited to the course, then it will be really rewarding for both you and them.. I remember watching some TV recorded from home last year and seeing a little ad snippet that was designed by one of my Chinese students after he'd gone on to study at a tertiary institution after studying with me - that was buzzy.
Good luck! |

Hi, I took an English for Academic Purposes class in first year university at McGill University in Montreal, Canada. The professor used an excellent book called Handbook for Writers, Second Canadian Edition, writers (Lynn, Quitman and Troyka). Its great, here are some of the following sections: Writing an Essay; Understanding Grammar; Writing Effectively; Using Punctuation and Mechanics; Writing When English Is a Second Language..." Good luck. |
