A fascinating account of some of the first westerners to make contact with Korea in the year 1666. A ship with Dutch traders was shipwrecked on the shores of Jeju Island.
What is fascinating is the reaction that the Koreans had to these foreigners and how the Koreans dealt with this intrusion. The Hermit Kingdom's policies regarding foreigners was so backwards. They didn't want other nations to know of their existence. I'm interested in your reaction to this article!

It was before noon, when we saw in the distance a human being at around a canon shot's distance away [500 mtr] from our tent. We beckoned him, but as soon as he saw us, he took to his heels. |
Quote: |
It seemed they liked the wine, because they drank that much that they became very cheerful and send our people back to the tent after they had shown and proved all friendship |
Quote: |
He (the governer) had them untied and had each given 25 blows on the bare buttocks with a stick which is about one fathom long and a finger thick at the bottom and round on the top |

requested (the king) passionately to let us leave to Japan. |
Quote: |
Upon this the king answered, again through Weltevree (a Dutchman who had been captured some 40 years previous), that this was not the custom of the country. Foreigners never received permission to leave the country. |
Quote: |
To the custom of the country he (the King) invited us accordingly to amuse him with dancing, singing and clownish behavior |
Quote: |
The Koreans... fooled us with telling us that every foreigner who sets foot on Japanese soil, immediately was beaten to death. |
It is quite a long article and may take a while to read but well worth it. Fascinating story ... Trapped in the Hermit Kingdom! |

Another funny excerpt:
Quote: |
We were daily invited to appear for several great men, because both men and their wives as well as their children were curious to see us. Because the rumor had been spread that we looked more like monsters than like human creatures. It was being said that, when we wanted to drink, we had to put our noses behind our ears. And that our heads were best to be compared to the head of a sea cow |
Quote: |
...we couldn't show ourselves on the street or a crowd was following us, or people were surrounding us and were gaping at us. |
Some things don't change |

I believe Guus Hiddinck was the only one to escape back to Holland, even after offers of gold... |

thanks, very interesting. i read about half, enough to want to print it and try it as class material with a couple of middle school students.
they lucked out when they got a 'begging permit' for down in cholla to be able to buy winter clothes (their old clothes being worn out from hauling firewood). i liked the part, earlier, where he says they were rumoured to look like 'sea cows' about the face. and that those who had heard this description in advance were disappointed, perhaps, that they weren't as ugly as all that. and how a mob broke into their quarters and hauled them out for jeering and ridiculing at one night, until they complained to the king. after that folks knew not to make a fuss over them, and they could walk around without drama.
