| I've always worked for either very tiny hagwons (where I am the ONLY teacher....no other foreigners or Korean teachers) or shady hagwons that ripped me off in lots of different ways and weren't above ripping off the government. Plus, it used to be that smaller hagwons were exempt from stuff like that. |

Well tonight I drop by FT #1's apt to say hi and find out they fired him for being the 'worst' teacher ever...he became the worst teacher ever when he refused to work at the local high school for free. So he was packed off to his recruiters in Suwon. The same recruiter that has placed the last 3 teachers at this hogwan from hell.
Poor guy is on his way to yet another place...I hope he gets the hell out of Korea alright. |

| What's the name of this place and this recruiter? Even if they only have one foreigner, at the rate they go through them it should be possible to warn at least one future victim off. |

My recommendation would be "to blacklist" all recruiters and hogwons unless an individual particularly earns your trust in one way or another.
Safest bet is to assume they're all liars, intent on pillaging, nothing more...then we will stop getting burned as a group, or at least be less likely to be burned or something like that. |

Prior to this year, hagwons with five or fewer full-time employees were not required to participate in the national pension plan. Owners, their family members and "part-time" teachers didn't count toward the five-person cap, regardless of the number of hours they worked.
Whether the law has actually changed, I don't know. I do know that our local government offices have been counting employees differently than in past years in an effort to require more widespread participation. |

Has anyone ever bothered to go the the National Pension Plan website? If you do a google search you will find it easily. It's an excellent site, in English. It even tells people who are from countries who do not have a tax treaty with Korea how they can be made exempt from the National Pension Plan. Instead of complaining about contributing into a plan that you don't get your money back from, find out how you can make yourself exempt. Also, some countries do not get a refund, but their contributions are credited toward their pension in their home countries. Britain( sp) is one of those countries.
All of the information is on the website. It is just a matter of reading it, and following the instructions for your particular country.

My haggie isn't all that bad. With the exception of the normal one kid complains all classes must change mentality. That is the most frustrating part of the job. Well that and the 170 report cards I have to write every month.
My haggie actually had me believing that they were making a semi-serious attempt at being a legit institute up until yesterday. Two of my students came to class saying they needed to leave early to go watch North Korea, Play South Korea in soccer.
My boss gave them permission of course. |

I can see a problem, the game was Sunday. Today is a game with Saudi Arabia, a meaningless WC qualifier

Dan's boss must be a close relative of one of my former bosses. Twice I was pulled out of class to go watch him play tennis--he wanted to show off his waygookin staff to his opponents.  Classes were cancelled for teachers to prepare for Game Day (teachers' game day was separate from the students).
Dan's right. It's a sign the school is not serious about education. |

I expect my students to learn something specific in each class. It's hassle enough to do make-up lessons with students who miss for legitimate reasons. It's an imposition on my time to have to do extra work for students who were watching a friggin' soccer game. Let 'em tape it and watch it later. |

Ohhh...i thought you meant they actually went and watched the game at the stadium...
To just want to watch it on TV, yeah that is dumb. |
