I realize that 'Oldboy' probably won't be considered for many Oscars. If it isn't nominated for Best Foreign Language Film (it should in fact be nominated for Best Film), I'll be P.O'd; but I will start a riot outside of Mann's Chinese Theater -- or wherever the hell the Academy Awards are held -- if it isn't at least nominated for Best Original Score. Listening tonight to the soundtrack, I realized that 'The Last Waltz (Mido's Theme)' is one of the most touching and lovely pieces of music I've ever heard.

It's absolutely sublime.

LORD, JUST SHOOT ME NOW.

A co-worker is trying to get a group of people together to go and see Hall & Oats.

I know this is not the right place for that, but while it's not worth starting a thread over I had to tell someone, and I know you'll feel my pain.

Old Boy, yeah I need to get that on DVD.
My avi download doesn't have subtitles if I burn it to DVD. Sad

OHH PLEASE!! OLDBOY A BEST MOVIE OSCAR?? get real!!!
ok im not saying the movie wasnt good. but a best picture???
NOWAY!! a best foreign movie.. it wont win!
if you look at the past of foreign language films that win oscars
they are always different kind of movies which OLDBOY is..
OLDboy is a cult, twisted revenge movie, the academy will not give that movie a statue! no good cinematogaphy first of all..
no real character driven actors. only the che min shik
naaa this movie wont win.. its just not the kind of movie which the academy gives awards too..
just look at the past winners! even nomintions.. this movie won in france
doesnt mean it has a chance at the oscars..
and the original score!! come on.. the last waltz is a nice piece but its been done a thousand times before.. and its nothing really that original!
best foreign language film?? NOWAY!!

For once I almost agree with this fool. Not that the oscars are a benchmark for great films, but 'Old Boy' is so heavily overrated only because Korea is yet to make a truly great film. This movie was so adolescent in it's character construction and so lazy in its narration, the idea that it's even a particularly good movie is a damn insult to serious fimmakers everywhere.

its already missed its chance... it was up for the 2005 oscars, but the Koreans decided to enter Taegukki instead. No second chances at the oscars

I think korea will only have a chance at an oscar when they make a real traditional movie something with great art direction, great cinematogaphy, acting and of course a great character driven story base
love story of such will do it.. something really true and shows cultural color that will do if for korea.. especially for the oscars
cannes korea has been there many times before! nothing new to them
but korea needs to produce a real story..
still pedro almodavar gets lucky alot at the oscars.. I mean I love his movies. but I think he is getting nominated for what ever he makes now
some of those movies didnt deserve that much attention..
but his movies are always character driven. and thats oscars like
OLDBOY had a great character but it was a revenge action movie oscars dont shine on those kind of movies..
mentally challanging, love stories, hardship etc.. those movies win oscars

I thought it was eligible for the 2006 Oscars if it opened in the US sometime in 2005, which I believe it did. This was the reason why it wasn't considered for last year's Oscars, I was told.

Yea-ah, this makes sense.

Just every Korean movie that was ever made.

Except Oasis. And Memories of Murder. And A Tale of Two Sisters. And Crying Fist. And, surprise, surprise, Old Boy.

I just don't deem a movie great cause it's fashionable to do so.

That whole scene with the "you want me to be your little dog? I'll even wag my tail for you. Look, i'm wagging my tail" ruins the whole movie for me.

Koreans have to learn that overacting doesn't equal good acting.

Until you explain what you mean by "adolescent in its character construction" (say what?) and "lazy in it's narration" (what, the voice over didn't do it for you?), nothing you say about the film means anything.

But it's clear that you're wrong.

And what's the difference between that and constantly railing against films that ARE fashionable. Forget your high horse, just watch the movie, forget all the ramifications of what it may mean to your precious standing if you like it, or not.

Hear, hear!

2 points:

1) Itaewonguy mentioned that the film doesn't have good cinematography. I cry B.S. The film was shot beautifully. It has tricks, but the tricks don't overwhelm, and it contains some of the most memorable shots and scenes in recent memory.

Only a few examples:

- Woo-jin wearing the gas mask as he watches Dea-su and Mi-do asleep.

- Dae-su holding the "I'm bugged, please find it" note up to the shopkeeper at the electronics market.

- The overhead shot outside the phone booth, as Joo-hwan notices that Dae-su has disappeared.

- The entire opening sequence inside the police station.

- 2 words: eating mandu.

- The Hitchcockian scene when Dae-su revisits his high school.

- Mi-do wearing the angel wings (as an aside, Paris Baguette this past Christmas was giving away angel wings with purchases. I thought the little girl would absolutely love them, but having seen 'Oldboy' I couldn't in good conscience take them home).

There are a million more. It's definitely not lacking in the cinematography department.

2) Sparkxx criticized the scene where Dae-su acts like a dog and goes so far as to lick Woo-jin's shoe, calling it overacting. I find it incredibly realistic that a man in that situation would go to such lengths. Moreso than to cut out his own tongue, say.

What I've noticed recently, between this thread and the 'Should Bonfrere be fired?' thread, is that some -- and definitely not all -- posters will adamantly refuse to support or like something simply because it's Korean. And that's just sad.

Oldboy is a classic film, like it or not.

i heard a lot about Old Boy before watching it, all good reviews and i must say that after watching the movie, i agree, it was well made, had an interesting, chilling storyline and left you thinking about it afterwards

for me, a movie is good only if it leaves you thinking about it, about the character's plight, about how the ending affected the movie as a whole

i dont know about best movie but it should definitely be a contender for best foreign film
