| I am starting a public school soon and was wondering if they usually have a firewall and such or will I be fine to use bit torrent while at the school. Thanks in advance. |

They will have a firewall, but I don't think that's a big issue. The bigger issue is killing the bandwidth at the school. My school asked me not to use any P2P stuff because it chews up the bandwidth. Perhaps your school will be the same.
My other school doesn't care, but the speeds are incredibly slow. |

| Sorry, you shouldn't be using bittorrent or p2p's at school. What the hell do you think this is? Super Happy Funland Vacation time!!! Instead prepare for your classes. |

preparation is for the untalented.
i used to download and share stacks of music on my school computer. transported it home via my ipod. they probably noticed the available bandwidth go up after i left there!
firewall issues can be overcome. use azureus. |

You should tell this to some of the K co-teachers. . .
I had bit torrent running in the background at my school when I was preparing.
I'd suggest that the best thing to do is to find a large download (say an installation of Linux). Make sure its on a quick server (find one thats quick at a pc room or in your apt.), then look at the download speed you get from it in your school first thing in the morning when theres only one or two teachers there.
Most bt apps have bandwidth settings. Just set it to use about 25-35% of the bandwidth.
I should think that anyone will care, out of sight out of mind. I'd put a password on the screensaver so that none could go snooping around whilst you were away from the deskt though. Just incase |

I work at a public school, and I see utterly no problem with downloading stuff.
I'm required to be in the building for 40 hours a week, though I teach only 22 of those hours. I only teach 4 lessons each week (and each lesson 5 or 6 times) If I spend two hours prepping each of those lessons that still leaves me with 10 hours with nothing in particular to do. Once I've finished the work I'm paid to do, why not make the best of a silly requirement. |

Find something for kids to watch, charlie brown or something.
If anyone gives you any hassles just tell that your downloading some stuff for use in class. |

| Using P2P at work for work is no big deal. I guess using it for personal stuff is uncool, simply because it's illegal (probably) and taking your illicit behavior to the job is not for the greater good. |

Plain and simple it's illegal. It'd be like selling drugs on school property. What you do on your own time and on your own computers is your own business, please don't give the rest of us a bad name for your illegal activities at the schools. |

Now lets not jump the gun and say that what SKC is going to be using bit torrent for is "illegal", your beginging to sound like a member of the supreme court.
Unless I misread the thread (quite possible in my tired and weary state), SKC never mentioned downloading anything "illegal", for all we know he may simply be wanting to download all the latest Linux RPM's (something I do very often).
Lets not start our daily working out by jumping to conclususion or flying off the handle. |

Preaching to the choir man.
You are one of those who think there is nothing legal to download on the network, right? |
