You know.. sorry for barging in and not really offering total sympathetic advice.. but you are NOT actually leaving the country.. I know they are obliged to pay for your return airfare (actually I have seen some job ads that specifically say you have to LEAVE the country for them to pay for that airfare and if you stay in the country, then they don't have to give you anything) but seeing you are staying, I think the fact that they are offering you 500,000 is a very nice gesture. They could have easily told you that since you were not going home, they needn't give you anything.

Or need they?

My contract states that return airfare or equivilent payout will be provided, but paying for airfare for low flying season doesn't strike me as equivilent. So I'm taking some of the advice of the previous posters and I went to a travel agency to get a print out of what the actual cost should be. I'll argue with her tomorrow over this issue and I'll find out what happens.
