There might be exceptions. But the law is that you get fined and deported if you get caught teaching illegal lessons with undeclared income.

There might be exceptions (like the two people you heard about). Mitigating circumstances might be the reason there.

However, normal procedure is fine and deportation.

Exit orders are given when a person is caught teaching illegally when on a tourist visa or to E2 visa holders when a revisit to one's degree shows that it's fake.

Exit orders are rarely given when a person is teaching illegally when they have an E2 visa and no other issues. Usually it's just a fine (500,000~1M) and a stern warning not to do it again. I don't know of anyone deported for working outside of their E2 visa though I know of many people who have paid the fine and stayed in the country.

Gord, something I wondered and maybe you could answer, is there a difference between an exit order and a deportation? I've known a couple of people who were given exit orders before for teaching on tourist visas, and all they did was take a short hop over to Japan and turned around and came right back in on another tourist visa.

if you only get fined, geeez. its kinda like a free pass.

Not really. It's a matter of human rights. Simply put, breaking up a family because of a minor visa infraction would be a great injustice, and a public relations nightmare.

how does a "fine" break up a family?? also, who's to say every marriage has kids?? haha, human rights??? thats a good one! Laughing

I think the poster was referring to deporting an F2 visa holder, thus causing the family strife, kids or not.

so was I ! paying a fine is "strife" and so is korea at times. theres a lot more things considered "strifes" than a fine of 500,000 won
