|
|
Here are 15 words beginning with the letter F.
How many do you know the meaning of? I realize
that cheating is easy in this case. But try it without
the dictionary.
floret
floriculture
florid
Florida
florist
floss
flotage
flotation
flotilla
flounce
flounder
flour
flourish
floury
flout

I'd be really surprised- given we are 'all' university grads and/or ESL teachers- that anyone would fall below the 10-15 word category (AND be willing to admit it here).
Zyzyfer would probably be an exception.

I'm a Uni grad, but I have a B.Sc. I took one English
course my whole time at University. So I know a lot
of science related words, but words like in the list, well?
But ask me the meaning of "heteroscedasticity", no probs. |

I would consider 8-9 of them to be common usage, so I didn't think it would be much of a stretch for ESL instructors to get 10+...
But maybe I'm wrong.

I thought that was one of the 'common usage' words!
So, I guess you don't do much yachting? |

Too easy. I'd be suprised if most of us could explain all these words reasonably well without resorting to using a dictionary, plus probably a great deal more. |

No, unfortunately my mind is all mushy these days. It was the most familiar of them all. I'd like to post something sent my way a few years ago explaining it's many uses, but the *beep* would come up about 30 times or so and I'm afraid it would lose it's pizazz. Plus, it would get deleted well before hardly a few had had a chance to enjoy/be annoyed. Perhaps if I'm feeling a little ballsy later.... |

one time, at the last class at this one institute.
I made a list of all the "prime" English words that students "needed" to learn.
I thought they would be disgusted by it, but they wanted to learn more.
I heard there are over 1,400 uses for the "f" word.
Could that be true??? |

I didn't know "floret" or "flotage". Is "flotage" pronounced flow-tahjh?
My guess for the 4 meanings is flounder. |
