Well I started back at school after summer vacation today.

Before I left I had a virus on my comp, then "something" happened to the C: drive and now my computer is fine. Well its fine but now I cant access some websites (most importantly Hotmail) and I cant log into MSN Messenger. Both just time out. Also a lot of programmes which used to start on boot up now dont. HELP!
Very Happy

send all your important gear to another computer on the network and then get the tech guy to format it and re-install windows...

there could be other things you could try but i wouldn't waste my time..

just start again

Is your school running a proxy server ? or some other form of web monitoring software ?

What are the other sites you can't log into ?
Try www.porn.com (when noone is looking) ... if there is a ban-list then that's almost certainly on it too.

Apart from that, check to make sure you have cookies enabled. I've had problems using hotmail before with cookies disabled...

Ya, I was just thinking that the porn suggestions probably wasn't a good idea ... afterall, if they are using web monitoring software then it probably wouldn't be a good idea to test it by looking at porn sites

... sorry Embarassed

sounds like it might be cookies ... what browser are you using ?

Go to this site and type in the address where you want to go. If it works then it probably means that the site is on a watch list with the ISP, your school is running a firewall, or there is a hard firewall running such as a router. If this is the case, just contact the person who handles your internet at your school and see if they can open that site for you.

To me, it sounds like someone was playing with your computer while you are away. Maybe they don't want you to access your email, p2p programs, games, etc. during work and so they took them out of the startup list and put blocks on some sites. If you want to edit your startup list, got to RUN>msconfig and click the boxes for all of the processes that you want in the startup area.
