Bah Corporal your twisting my words arent you.

All I was saying is i dont know a job in England that is as rewarding and creative as one I have here. Money is an issue, but when is it ever not in this life. all (no capital letter after a full stop AIEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE) I was trying to do is make people appreciate, that sure the job/place is not perfect but its pretty damn good overall.

That's nice.

No, I'm not twisting your words. You were the one who used "impact" in such creative ways in the first post. I only pointed out that there yet exist old-fashioned language lovers like myself who believe that is wrong, despite the modern-day cretins who dance around waving the "language is evolving!" banner to excuse all and any inaccuracies.

Were it not for the money, sure as cheese maketh pizza, i would not be here. Sure, I care about the students. I try and do my job to the best of my abilities, regardless of the BS I (we teachers in general) have to wade through every day... But no.... even the joy of having a student finally realise that the word "chicken" is not spelt with a "W" is not enough to keep me here..... but the money is... for a little longer...

DING--WRONG! I have three months left in this contract and you better believe I am itching to get out of here for a looooooong break. Korea pisses me off as much as the next guy. However, I don't feel the need to label millions of people as bigoted just because of a bunch of retarded ajumas and ajoshis.

I love (ellipses............) I use them incorrectly all the time...! woo hooo....! lock me up!

Like it or not language evolves or we could still use dictionaries from 100 years ago. They add words to dictionaries all the time and thank the lord we AIN'T ( Twisted Evil ) using the same slang they used in Shakespeare's time...............(more abuse of ellipses) or even my mom's time.

I do rather enjoy the grammar nazis from time to time cuz I learn from them...but.......(even more) does it change my style of informal chat/bulletin board writing..........(yet again) NOPE.

When I write my mom on the other hand I am pretty good about controlling my slang and (............) cuz she gets all cranky and whines about my grammar and over abundance of (..............). So I always try to brush off the good stuff for her.

But here nopies...I use slang..bad puncuation..........(dear god the horror) and constantly run afoul with the grammar nazis......(will it never end?) it's like teepeeing the local cranky old man's house......IS IT WRONG! HELL YES......IS IT FUN...HELL YES...

Lobs one more roll at the grammar nazis and takes off.....

Jade...cuz sometimes (.............) abuse is fun! I abuse ellipses....sue me.

Are more Koreans than Yanks retarded and bigoted?

I wonder if there are stats on this somewhere.

I bet more Yanks are retarded and more Koreans are bigoted.

Or is it the other way around?

That's right Language doesn't evolve.

Lord's Prayer I (Exeter Book,10th c.)

(The Exeter Book, ed. Krapp and Dobbie 1936)

Dated 1384 (Middle English)
Oure fadir at art in heuenes halwid be i name;

And foryeue to us oure dettis at is oure synnys as we foryeuen to oure dettouris at is to men at han synned in us.
And lede us not into temptacion but delyuere us from euyl.

AND FINALLY MORE PROOF THAT LANGUAGE DOES NOT EVOLVE. Rolling Eyes

In this extract Mandeville describes the land of Bactria, apparently not an altogether inviting place, as it is inhabited by "full yuele [evil] folk and full cruell."

In at lond ben trees at beren wolle, as ogh it were of scheep; whereof men maken clothes, and all ing at may ben made of wolle. In at contree ben many ipotaynes, at dwellen som tyme in the water, and somtyme on the lond: and ei ben half man and half hors, as I haue seyd before; and ei eten men, whan ei may take hem. And ere ben ryueres and watres at ben fulle byttere, ree sithes more an is the water of the see. In at contré ben many griffounes, more plentee an in ony other contree. Sum men seyn at ei han the body vpward as an egle, and benethe as a lyoun: and treuly ei seyn soth at ei ben of at schapp. But o griffoun hath the body more gret, and is more strong, anne eight lyouns, of suche lyouns as ben o this half; and more gret and strongere an an hundred egles, suche as we han amonges vs. For o griffoun ere wil bere fleynge to his nest a gret hors, 3if he may fynde him at the poynt, or two oxen 3oked togidere, as ei gon at the plowgh.

Old West American Style:

Not only was he a flour-flusher but he was as full as a tick. I heard he was quite the flannel mouth too.

Not only was he a cheat but he was drunk. I heard he was quite a smooth talker.

Language evolves all the time. Does it excuse bad grammar? No. But like it or not it does evolve.

Jade the evil grammar abuser!

Grammar nazis are funny. I mean they get sooooo worked up and feel so realived when they can realise their anger over someone elses mistake. Almost reminds me of some porn i\'ve seen.

Dear Fellow English Teachers:

I just wanted to point out a few things to you.

1. Correcting word usage does not make one a "grammar Nazi." That would make one a "diction Nazi," if anything.

2. When Corporal laments people using the "'language is evolving!' banner to excuse all and any inaccuracies," she isn't saying that language doesn't evolve. She's saying that is a lame excuse for poor writing.

3. A good teacher should be a good student. Why disdain a free and easy lesson?

4. This thread got hijacked pretty badly.

Thanks for listening,

Qinella the Comprehension Nazi

What lesson...

First corporal was simply wrong...

Quote:
you should probably know that "impact" is a noun and not a verb

Then she twisted his words....

Quote:
At any rate the OP seemed more excited about making money and leaving this "bigoted country" than about the students, but whatever.

Seemed to me that anyone without an agenda reading his post would have seen how much the poster enjoyed teaching rather than centering on his last comment. And there is no mention whatsoever of leaving the country...so besides twisting words she is adding some...

Then our learned teacher goes on to call those people who have some knowledge of the nature of discourse, literacy and how langugaes change...cretins...just for knowing about how language works and the nature of discourse...

Those people who know something about discourse realize that there is a huge variety of discourses each acceptable at different times and in different places. No one would condemn someone for using a word differently if they were writing poetry...no one bothers with grammar while writing recipes...and in a discussion board most people accept that people are 'writing' in a way that mirrors spoken language so almost anything goes as long as comprehension is not lost.

Therefore...we get to use any punctuation marks that we want to...and for the most part we all know how to use them....we choose to do something different for various reasons.

The poster used a wordin a certain context...most of us understood completely what he meant...and given time his meaning may even enter the dictionary...whose to say...(actually it is the media and not the makers of dictionarnies...as usually dictionaries are simply catching up to what is already in use)

Poor writing...not to got back to the whole discourse thing...but what counts on a discussion board is communication and not writing and no one can accuse anyone of poor communication on this thread...we could accuse people of poor teaching if that was their intention...

Finally...is it really right to call people Nazi's when talking about grammar and diction...or really anything except mass murderers...

edited once for typo

Yep, she was wrong. But so was blunder's usage. If she were right, people still would've flipped out.
