Hi,

My hagwon is suffering. they have cut my hours. they have also said they will allow me to work elsewhere to make ends meet. i found a little part-time gig, and this part-time gig wants me to get some kind of letter from my hagwon saying that they allow me to work outside my contract. they want to take it to immigration and clear whatever papers, so i can start working. this is NOT a letter of release they want.

Does anyone know about this? how does it work? how long will it take to get this paperwork throught immigration?

Please advise?

Thanks.

You're going to try to get an "add-on" to your E-2 visa. It's legit as long as your E-2 sponsor(your main hakwon) and immi allow it. For how long it takes, I think it depends on which immi office you're dealing with. You have to submit your permission letter, the PT gig's contract, passport, alien registration card, a completed "Application for Alteration or Addition of Employment Place" form, and I think 60,000won. Have your boss check on it or ask immi yourself. Boo-sahn receipts say 10 days, but you might be able to get it done quicker than that. This way, you're definitely legal, but don't work until the paperwork is finalized. If immi allows it, they'll stamp the add-on for the PT place in your passport as well as add it to the back of your alien registration card.

see here as to the procedure for getting it done.

Don't know about other immi offices but at Uijeongbu it took me about 15 minutes.

thanks for that info guys. sounds like a bit of a runaround, but it will be worth it to be legal.

If I can just ask a question on-topic. WTF happens if you lose your job because the hagwon closes. Can you get another ESL job on the same visa or do you have to get another visa?

Short answer; you need a new visa sponsored by your next employer. It's a whole new visa application, sealed transcripts, diploma, two day trip to Japan etc. etc.
