This is the part that must be misreported. How can Immigration get involved in a civil matter? And why?
If their civil laws are written this way, then this is a terrible place to work in EFL...a potential slave-like state. |

I suppose it depends where she's from and what that country's rules are regarding a lost or stolen passport. But I wouldn't entirely discount this option if she can't leave the country anyway, what's a week here or there?
All she has to do is say someone picked her pocket. |
As far as I know, replacement passports still have your name on them as well as the same passport number, thus she wouldn't get a new disguise to help her sneak away. All she'd be doing is spending extra money. |

I'm Cdn, so I'm not sure about other nations' policies. I'm on my third passport. Name has been the same on all three; number has been different on all three. |

Libel is a criminal matter in Korea, for example. That could be one reason. Another is that one could request the court to try and prevent a person from leaving as it would be unlikely to attend the trial and justice would be prevented.
The court would have explained the reasoning when issuing the exit suspension. |

I don't know about Canada, but no plaintiff could ever get away with this in the United States. There have been so few "arrests" in civil matters in the entire history of the U.S. that I could probably count them on one hand. That's why it seems so scary to me that Korea can just reach out and grab you like this, all because of a hogwon director's allegations... |

This could never happen in Canada. Ever. I doubt many countries if any at all would allow something like this - holding a foreign teacher hostage in the country whenever some disgruntled boss feels like lying.
If this story is valid, and this gets around the psycho hagwon director community, then we're all seriously *ucked.
So, I hear Vietnam is paying fairly well these days.... |

We still don't know the entire story though. Remember Denise? Let's wait until we have more information. |

People always make themselves look better. The teacher is not telling all of the truth. Why would a school go to this much trouble for nothing. They had to hire a lawyer which would mean a few million at least, and the wasted time involved in stopping the teacher from leaving. This sounds like the teacher was doing something we don't know about.
I have met many really big as@#@@#holes teaching in Korea. I mean the teachers themselves are not exactly good people. Lets hear the truth from the person involved.....where are they....they never posted here, just some nameless post started this discussion. |

This is a very valid point. However, I still believe it is POSSIBLE that the teacher is basically telling the truth. Maybe not likely, but have you ever known someone with a serious personality disorder? I have, and psychos can be very venegeful. The also have a tendency to own hagwons, at least according to what I've read on this board. But yeah, the cost of lawyers in Korea, which the school would have to hire, makes me wonder...... |

She should go to her embassy...perhaps it's illegal for immi to hold her passport for a civil matter...who knows?
or.....just get a new passport and say "adios!" |
If she's American, the embassy won't do jack to help her. They never lift a finger. |

I would sincerely like to know the full story if that is at all possible.
It is unfortunate that Korean culture has created an atmosphere where this teacher's story can be believed. The idea that a human being can own another human being is not only still alive and well in this country, but is also exported to countries that (today) find the idea repugnant. The recent incedent of a Korean-Australian woman bashed by her Korean-Australian pastor for not attending church is an example of this mentality.
Let's hope that this present situation is not as bad as it seems. |
