Sorry, I can't be of much help. But, I think that was your mistake. Play by the rules and someone moves the goal posts.

They've got to pay for your ticket(at least one of them) as it's in your contract.

What experience does your overseer have?

Usually someone gets landed with the job(happens in EPIK) and they become responsible for you. Some nominees even attempt to play the contractual creative interpretive K-legal eagle(at your expense) to reduce overheads and earn lots of face in the process.

The Korean working experience is boundaries testing, brinksmanship, and a waiting game. Think payoff and think/play to win. Koreans do it all the time.

Foreigners(according to one Korean teachers stats.;70% of all visitors to Korea have a bad experience) have such a sour memories in the ROK.

Don't let them play poker with your money. Your money is your friend.

Well at first I was inclined to think that it was your problem as you had missed the flight, but after thinking about it, they are responsible for the ticket that got you home. So I think they owe you for the more expensive ticket. Have you re-signed a new contract with GEPIK?

Wrong!

The flight clause was fair as they pay for only round trip airfare. GEPIK is doing their job.

What's your beef with GEPIK, Grotto? Many know you are employed by them, if I'm not mistaken.

What does this mean? The contract says that the employer will pay for a "direct, economy class flight from employee's home to Incheon." I bought a round trip ticket (to get home, and then to get back) and charged them for half of it. In any case, I'm not sure what you mean by "only round trip airfare" or what "flight clause" you're referring to.

This post has brightened my morning. Good to see muppetry is alive and well in the wacky world of ESL. The mistake is yours. You missed the flight. Yet you want your school to pay the penalty for your mistake. There is absolutely no reason at all why they should, or indeed will. If I were you I would stay well clear of the Labor Board. If you do go they'll have to issue diapers to their staff, 'cos they'll be pis*ing themselves for months

I think the labour board should busy themselves with the corrupt schools that fire their teachers at the 11th month or don't pay salaries and what not. You're getting your airfare.

If you were back in Winterpig I don't know if you would have any recourse either. First they would look at your contract. If its says something like,

The contract isn't specific enough regarding price and they would probably go with some kind of 'reasonable person' notion. Missing a flight isn't reasonable.

Many things are the big bad hogwan's fault, but not this one.

Oh for christ sakes I can't beileve people are fighting over this. She booked the flight, she knew when it was departing and yet missed it through her own dis-organisation and now expects someone else to pay for her mistake.

This is a classic example of why unionism doesn't work.

Interesting point. I will have to look at the exact wording to see if that's true. By the way, I'm not working for a hagwon. I'm working for Fat Mother Gyeonggi-do (GEPIK). Maybe it's my Canadian socialist side coming out, as CLG. They did check to see if the airline gave me a regular (rather than an emergency) fare, and yep-- that was their normal price.

Would it be ethical and reasonable for me to have booked the flight with Singapore Air to begin with? After all, my supervisor said "Price doesn't matter." Would the school be responsible for the ticket if I hadn't missed the first flight?

I'm not going to get hysterical about this, and I don't think I'll bother with the Labour Board (odds are good they're side with the government regardless of what the contract says).

It's over $700 out of my pocket, but it was worth it to see my grandfather for that day. He won't be around much longer I suspect, and he needed a boost.

*slightly bitter mumbling*
(They say it's my mistake, and that I should pay. Okay, but I find it hypocritical given that my supervisor failed to cancel a cell phone account when he said it was sorted out, then insisted that I pay for the fees that accumulated for the rest of the year. His mistake; my money. I'm done with the contract as of today, so I will just try to put it behind me and forget about the whole business.)

I've taken a lot of flack for posing this question, but I'm sure most of you would ask yourself the same thing in the same circumstances. I'm not going to raise hell-- I just wanted to consider my options.

Decision: let the Gyeonggi supervisor sort it out. Take the blow to the wallet and count my blessings.

The cell phone issue was your supervisor's fault. However, since there's nothing in writing, good luck fighting it. Your word against a Korean's. HAH.

I still get a kick out of what I read before coming to Korea. I read somewhere that the Korean spoken word was more trustworthy than the written word. Laughing Laughing Laughing Laughing Laughing Laughing
I still have to piss myself laughing when I think back to that one.
