Wow...

That's sad. Can it be any more blatant?

Of course, I think the difference may be that they might have paid for the bread if the convenience store was open, but I don't know.

I did see some people on CNN wheeling an entire rollaway shelf of candy bars down a street. I would consider them looters.

Still, wow.

Well, in fairness to yahoo:

Quote:
Two residents wade through chest-deep water after finding bread and soda from a local grocery store after Hurricane Katrina came through the area in New Orleans, Louisiana.

The words "finding" and "from" would seem to indicate that the bread and soda was away from the grocery store at the time they found it. So, what were they supposed to do in the middle of a flood? Take it back to the store?

Quote:
A young man walks through chest deep flood water after looting a grocery store in New Orleans on Tuesday, Aug. 30, 2005. Flood waters continue to rise in New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina did extensive damage when it made landfall on Monday.

Assuming the writer's terminology accurately describes the situation: if the guy took the stuff out of the store, then that fits the definition of "looting", in a way that finding and keeping stuff that floated away from the store does not.

Plus, the guy is carrying a fairly large garbage bag, which might indicate premeditation, assuming the bag is loaded with groceries. But I do wonder how exactly the photographers knew what was in the bag, and how it got there.

I guess this it can be said that some people assume.

Others investigate.

When we see a photo, we rely on the person who writes the caption to tell us the story. When the captions are short, they often don't tell us much. I'm going to give the writer the benefit of the doubt, based on the fact that he/she was there, and I wasn't.

To those of you who think, "it couldn't be more plain [racism] than that," I would, as a black man, say that life can be a whole lot more enjoyable if you don't look for racism under every rock, or see the world through racism glasses.

People go overboard with the "R" word. It dillutes the power of it, and quite frankly, people get sick of hearing it thrown around at every opportunity. It's my theory that this makes even the non-racist white man so sick of it that he/she gets to the point where they think black people are whining and don't deserve any help.

How can that be good?

They had the American version of The Office on tv last night, the one where corporate HQ brings in a guy to give mandatory sensitivity training after the boss tries to do a Chris Rock impression that ends up offending everybody.
It was hilarious.
For some reason this thread reminded me of it.
"Oh, so it's okay for Chris Rock to do that sketch, because he's black, and everybody think it's hilarious; But ME, because I'm a white guy- if I do the same act it's suddenly offensive?"
(He was trying to do Chris Rock's "I love black people, but I hate niggers" monologue, and it was pretty ugly)

As someone who trys to treat everyone the same and can annoy everyone equally. I don't feel that it is simply a case of black people whining as a case of an overuse of the notion, looking for the bad in everybody not of your own color, ethnicity, etc. Or being used to judge others and discredit thier points, arguments without giving real consideration to them. The use of racism as a catchphrase to prevent discussion is the biggest problem I have with the over use of the term.

I have been in the position that I have looked at peoples actions as being racist when in fact they weren't they were just pricks. I am surprised though that in the 1960's American troops in Vietnam had different drinking holes for different folks and it doesn't seem to have changed much even today.l

Amazing.

I'll second that.

After viewing such items, i can't help but wonder what someone like ol' George Orwell would have to say re: balance & objectivity in the media?

Salon.com did a fairly indepth article on it, asking some questions about where the images came from. It's worth a look:

(you'll have to endure a 5-second ad to get to it)

well who do you think is the ones doing this stuff, working class married white males or gang banging punks from the ghettos?:

NEW ORLEANS --The evacuation of the Superdome was suspended Thursday after shots were reported fired at a military helicopter and arson fires broke out outside the arena. Richard Zeuschlag, chief of the ambulance service that was handling the evacuation of sick and injured people from the Superdome, said it was suspending operations "until they gain control of the Superdome." Shots were fired at a military helicopter over the Superdome before daybreak, he said. He said the National Guard told him that it was sending 100 military police officers to restore order. "That's not enough," said Zeuschlag, whose Acadian Ambulance is based in Lafayette. "We need a thousand."

NEW ORLEANS, Sept. 1 -- Armored military vehicles and national guard troops started moving into New Orleans Thursday morning amid continuing reports of violence and chaos.

Sadly, I looked through tons of online and CNN photos and video trying to get a handle on this set of photos.

The most telling thing for me was the CNN looting video. Not a white face in the bunch. My black brothers and sisters stealing left and right. Not sharing. Just taking. Sorry, I cant link you to it directly. You have to search the CNN video yourself.

Now we can all sit and argue about white this and black that, but the truth, to me, is this: We black people have to admit the fact that we, taken as a whole, have problems and we have things to improve on. No sense in blaming the white man anymore. Its time for us to look inward and solve the problems.

If an alcoholic has a problem, the first step is admitting the problem and then making a plan to deal with it. Black people, and the whites who seem to enjoy arguing at our expense, whatever their intentions, need to stop blaming the white man for the way things are and just admit it and deal with it.

In my opinion, people who shout racism at every turn are trying to win an argument, not help black people advance.

I want to help black people. After looking at this video, I believe the only way to do that is to admit something is wrong and deal with it through education, and so on.

if anyone has problems just log in at home page and click from there. otherwise I don't know where that CNN link went either. Here's a FEW of their pictures...

you know I thought ALL of New Orleans was under water, but guess not.

Damn! Having a shotgun aimed at your head! Can't imagine.

Here's some water shots.

However, it is in the interests of the race relations industry, and people like Jesse Jackson to constantly perpetuate the idea that racism, and racism alone is responsible for all the woes of black people. If they did not do this, many of them would be out of a job.

Black, white, I don't care, in the current situation I can see nothing wrong with taking the necessities of life from abandoned stores which are already going to be filing massive insurance claims.

Food, guns, clothes. (And yes, the way things are going in the Big Easy I think arming yourself is necessary.)

Now those we see in the pictures taking massive amounts of resale items like beer...well, that's messed up.

Where are you all finding info on the crime situation down there?
I've been having some difficulty finding good, in depth information on what the situation is.

I'm with jinglejangle. Both local and federal government have failed miserably to adequately deal with the situation. Everyone knew this was a big storm and that it was going to do some major damage but it looks like no one was prepared.

I'd be the first person arming myself, and helping myself to things to provide the necessities of life. However I wouldn't be pinching TV's shooting at rescue choppers nor burning down buildings.

It's a question of numbers. Who are the majority of offenders doing the looting? According to officials it is predominantlyAfrican-Americans who either ignored the compulsory order to evacuate, didn't have the necessary means to evacuate or who deliberately stayed behind to take advantage of the situation .

Declare the equivalent of martial law and start shooting. I've never been to the states but if its own citizens can so easily turn on each other during times of emergency then...WTF! I'm glad I'm not an American. You would never, ever see anything similiar in NZ. People much prefer to help each other than rape and shoot each other.

Reports are that victims are being raped and beaten inside the Orleans Convention Center! Shocked
