Fellow Men, sometimes I get the feeling that we are just trophy boyfriends for many of the women that we date. Im not complaining, Im just curious if others out there are feeling the same way? |

TROLL alert.
If you're not a troll.......I can't say that I have seen many male teachers in Korea that I would describe as trophy boyfriends. Maybe my standards are a little high. |

I can see one big opportunity to fill that role starring me in the face at the moment. |

You're the guy from the song 'Leader of the Pack' the one who crashes his motorbike over the cliff. |

Oh god. Troll or this guy is in the running for Top 3 Banal Posters of the Year.
Yes. You're a huge prize! Those sweet young women chasing/dating future doctors, samsung execs, et al are jealous as hell another woman has landed, by general consensus, a foreigner who can't get a GF or a decent job in his own country...

Ok, forget I ever brought it up. I just see a lot of Korean girls walking around hand in hand with their foreign boyfriend(s) like they are trying to show off that they can land a foreigner. |

Maybe these women just want other people to envy them for what appears to be their excellent English speaking ability. |

Interesting OP and especially the responses. I doubt it would have sparked so many sharp replies were it posted on the China or even Japan forums. Charisma Men are very much in fashion there, I hear. Guess Korea's just determined to buck the trend.

and? I see far more walking hand in hand with their Korean boyfriends.
Just a little off topic but why do some posters continue to make the idiotic comment that foreign teachers are losers who can't cut it back home? Case in point mindmetoo's comment.

Just a hint, look in the mirror. Do you honestly believe that all foreign teachers over here are losers except you? Bizarre if you do... Most people I know are normal, well adjusted folk who happen to be teaching in Korea. |

What's this all about? Are you speaking for yourself? Don't include me and some others in that bracket. |

Either I'm misunderstanding "by general consensus" in that comment or everyone else is.
I take mindmetoo to be saying that that unflattering description seems to be the general-consensus opinion of Koreans regarding English teachers in Korea, not his own personal opinion. He may well be wrong in his reading of most Koreans' opinions, but he isn't claiming that he shares them. (Or I've got it all wrong) |

You don't have it all wrong. (But I, too, may have misunderstood.)
In any case, the problem is that there is a strong tendency on this board to look for easy opportunities to simplify and generally mischarachterize others' words, and especially, intent, for no other reason than just to pounce on them.
People here don't look to understand what someone means but rather they wait for just the right moment to pick apart what they say, like attys bickering over a contract... |

Well.. I am a woman and I am Asian.
In Hong Kong, I would say that this is certainly true. A lot of women seek out white gwailo as trophy boyfriends. It doesn't matter whether you are good looking or ugly, having a western boyfriend makes you look *chic*.
Not to mention, of course, that they want that ticket to live abroad.
Having said that, there are some that truly love their gwailos and are not doing it to show off.
In Korea? I don't know.
If a girl befriends you, has a relationship with you, then breaks it up to say that her family oppose to it, then yes, I see it that they just use you as a trophy boyfriend.

I can't speak for the guys, but my fiance gets a lot of comments that "he's so lucky" or thet he "did a good job". I told him I was confused by this, and he said it's for several reasons. He said it's because I make more money than the average Korean woman, and that we won't have to send our kids to an English hakwon, which will save vast amounts of money. Interesting- seems to come down to money. I thought people would feel sorry for a Korean guy marrying a foreign woman (if they had any opinion on the subject whatsoever). This is because of my inability to cook Korean food (somewhat able to overcome, although there are many dishes he likes that I don't), and my limited Korean skills (he often has to play translator), which I can also overcome (but at this point I'm unlikely to do so because I'm lazy about studying Korean). Anyway, I hope I'm not hijacking your post, but I know some people probably think of me as a trophy. Whatev. |

White women are considered trophy wives by most non-white peoples. |
