I don't consider myself straight-laced and I enjoy the occasional wild drinking night but I'm not a fan of going out every night, or even every weekend and dropping 20,000 + won on alcohol. all i've ever gotten out of it was headaches the next day and a few extra pounds around the middle. however, this view has branded me as a bit of a social outcast at my school as all of the Korean and foreign teachers get wasted on a regular basis. when i meet a new person, whether he or she is army, a teacher, or a korean, they always seem to list drinking as their #1 hobby.

i pass no judgement on heavy drinkers but i'm not going to change who i am and waste a lot of money just to fit in. does anyone know of any places or clubs etc where a non-smoking light social drinker might fit in?

Yeah, I got wierd looks turning down drink at our latest social thing. I find if you do a few shots "one shot" stylee they are generally happy and then let me drink what I like after that! Very Happy

Never had a problem with not smoking if anything its looked on as a noble thing in my school.

don't smoke and I only drink one or two beers in about 2 months. I like the taste of beer, but don't like the effects.

Where are you? Be easier to meet like-minded people if such people had an idea of how far away you are from them. Smile

Just tell 'em "So sorry, no time to drink, I have to go post on Dave's."

Works a charm for me.

I don't smoke or drink whilst I'm writing up my class prep notes. After that, it's game on.

I don't smoke and I drink occasionally. Yes, hanging out with people who drink little or no alchohol is a good thing. Seoul Selection at Kwanghwamoon is a nice spot.

I don't smoke and I periodically give up drinking. I can drink more than most of my friends if I choose, I don't get hangovers either so that is a big plus. But my friends know that if I don't want to drink tonight, or if I have to work the next day, that's my decision and they don't pressure me. It took me only about two or three drinking sessions with them to get the idea into their heads, but after that I only get one or two comments when we go out and thats it. I still love to go out drinking with them, but often I dont have any alcohol. You have to teach them that it's ok to go out and not get wasted, that you can still have a good time.

I'm the same way, I think that if I drank that could prove to be dangerous.

20.000 + try 100.000 plus....
use to cost me 800.000 a month on going out from 2001-2004
then I cut down to about 500.000 plus a month on drinks!

now I dont even go out! ive done it all.. seen it all..
might venture back out full swing 2006

800,000 X 12 months X 4 years (2001, 2002, 2003, 2004) = 38,400,000 won!!!

Man I hope you're using the standard 100% exaggeration rule that guys can use when telling drinking and sex stories. If you are being serious I feel very sorry for you.

I don't understand why so many teachers hang out with their coworkers so often. Once in a while for dinner is fine, but otherwise, leave work at the office. I have a great relationship with my coworkers, but it's a professional one. No one knows too much about the others' lives and when we go home, we don't take the workplace with us. Socializing with coworkers feels like working to me.

OP: if you live near Kyodae and like sports, for example, join a gym. In an area like that, there's bound to be other waegooks at the place (if, indeed, it's waegooks you're after). Join the Seoul Ultimate Frisbee club, though I hear they do a fair bit of drinking, too. Check out Adventure Korea for some travel options. Go to an AA meeting. Being in Seoul, you'll have more available than if you lived in, say, Iksan.
