I dont know where to put this, so Im just plopping it here.
My brother came here right out of university. He was here for 3+ years. Now hes back home (the U.S.), married, job hunting and having a hell time of it. He has an engineering degree, but no engineering experience. Hes now looking at working offshore in the North Sea. Yes, he saved up a good bit of money, but theyve had to live off that cash for a few months now. Its not funny how fast that can go.
The spousal unit and I have been in SK for a year now and plan on doing at least a couple of more here plus a few more years in Asia and beyond before (maybe) heading back to North America. We kinda have plansso did my brother.
What are your plans for after Korea? Particular those of you who have been here two years or more. |

I'm planning on spend ing another two (three max) years here in Korea, chipping away at the behemoth student loans. Then, maybe a semester at uni doing a couple post-graduate courses. After that, moving west to British Columbia for the rest of my life |

It may be hard for someone with an engineering degree to find something that pays well, but if you're a communication major like I am and you don't mind starting out at the bottom, there is work. I know at least five people that started out with a crappy job and worked hard, had ups and downs but finally got what they were looking for with persistance and patience, myself included. I know another guy that gave up his job (engineer) in Oklahoma to be with his Korean wife and has been looking for a job now for 8 months in Phoenix. Lucky for him his wife makes 50K a year. |

I'm sorry but that is the most ridiculous thing I've ever seen. What's wrong with 'husband' or 'wife'?
I really don't understand why you have to use this term. |

I really don't understand why you have to bother people.
After Korea? I'm thinking about the ongoing Korea...guess I'm here for a while... |

I think I'm one of those lucky few for whom time in Korea will actually benefit me when I go back. I'm a certified teacher in the States and I'm working at an accredited foreign school here. So, I'll go back with 3 (or more? Dunno how long I'll stay) years of teaching that will count towards both pay scale and experience.
...That is IF--big if--I decide to go back to the States. I dunno. I just found out that my baby brother is getting married this Christmas. That makes me the last single person in the family. Ugh. Do I really want to go back and hang out with all my married-and-having-babies siblings? |

Spousal unit is perfectly acceptable. There are many worse things he could call her/him.
For me, I dont have a clue. Ive only been here for a few months, no student loans, no debt, and I even have a nice chunk of change back home from when I sold my car (Im still weeping over that, 2002 Mustang GT Convertible). But who knows what will happen here. |

Hopefully Ill stay here for another couple of years until Im debt-free and then have a whole of money saved up.
Then its back home for a 3 year post-grad degree of which the 3rd year is placement experience. Usually the employer will keep you on as an employee after your year experience is up so its like walking into a job. |

I've gone back and forth between living in Korea and North America several times.
After two years teaching in Korea and Brazil in 1996-1998.. I arrived back in the U.S... New York City to be exact. Started training on powerpoint, excel, word (while doing other temp jobs).. and six months later found myself creating presentations for an investment bank at $25/hour.
In 2000 came back to Korea.. only to return back to the U.S. again in 2001 living in San Francisco.. ended up working at City Hall Election Department (only $14/hour though) as well as tons of various temp work at temp agencies (before that job)... but then came back to Korea again.
Whats next?
I'm not entirely sure.. looking at an online export/import course.. to see if I could get into that. Thinking next time I might just try living in Honolulu (and taking on whatever I can).. or Seattle (huge port city - must be somewhere there import/export related just to try for).
I'm one of those guys thats just lands on his feet somehow or another whever I go. Honestly I don't understand how some guys can't find any work in major cities and go unemployed for more than a week or two at a time. I generally hit up every single temp job employer in a city.. and you'll be placed somewhere within a week tops.. two at the most. Just interview at every single place until you are in all of their databases and just keep calling. |

Yeah, I was baffled by this quote too. Superfly, are you saying that engineers don't get paid well?
Man, all the engineering majors I knew had the highest entry-level salary out of anyone. I mean, the chemical engineers were racking in 60k the first year after college graduation. I am dead serious.
There always seemed to be high demand for engineers and they had no problem finding them, top dollar.
Oh well, what do I know, I studied sociology.... |

I thought you were home.
I am home here in Daegu for now. When I go traveling these days, and I look forward to "going home", that place I am looking forward to is here. |
