My brother's a lawyer in Canada and I asked him about this. He passed it on to 1 of his partners who specializes in this area. He said that a Canadian based company cannot run ads that discriminate( ie race color creed or age) and break Canadian laws no matter where the job is. He said that if someone reports a Canadian company to the Human Rights Board for running a discriminatory ad that company can face fines and other forms of punishment. He said he wasn't certain but he thought the law in the US is probably the same.
So the employers can ask for certain restrictions to be advertised but if the company advertising is North American based it looks as though they may be violating their own laws if they run the ads and somone complains to the proper authorities

I'm starting to look for work for next year and I find it HIGHLY discriminatory that many many ads say 'North American only', 'North American accent only'. I mean, heck, what the hell do THEY have that I (an Australian) doesn't have? Not wanting to start a flame war, I think Aussies and Brits sound FAR better than Americans, our diction is much better and we don't talk like we're slurred!

Sorry Smile

That may be true but look where Korean companies export most of their products-North America. I guess they figure they may as well be exposed to the accent they will be dealing with in business.

Just tell them that you have a North American accent. 99% of them couldn't tell the difference.
