We'd like to leave but I think she has applied for the 'green paper' (?) already. This is the paper that she files with immigration saying that she is sponsoring us.
The way we understand it, we can't get another job now without her signing a release for us. It we want to keep working in Korea, we are (according to immigration) already under her sponsorship, and need her release.
My wife and I are really torn about this.
She pushes the limits of acceptable behavior on the contract, but never quite crosses it. And she is having us teach illegally, of course.
She delayed us past our 30 day tourist visa and we accumulated fines. Of course we didn't realize we had overstayed our 30 visa until after that fact. We thought we had a 90 day visa--but US citizens only get 30 day visas.
Once we told the director this, she promised us she'd take care of it and within 48 hours we had an extension stamp in our passport, giving us 60 more days.
It's sad to say, but she basically used flirtation and her looks to get this done....and a 100,000 bribe to the four immigration officials at the office.
She took the guy out and got him drunk and flirted (I assume ) and he said if she paid and extra 100,000 won, he's process the papers.
Korea is so corrupt. |

We've only been paid for one month so far and she didn't take anything out. We got paid the full amount in cash.
She said she couldn't take out taxes or insurance yet since we weren't technically working for her yet.
At least that was honest of her.
I've started a new topic about this because I think I should have mentioned the visa issue right up front and I want some opinions on it.
Please respond to that one. |

If you havent done your visa run yet you can freely leave and take another job. It isnt until you have filed your paperwork...done your visa run that the visa is in her name.
Dont be afraid to put your foot down with her.
One thing to keep in mind is if your gut is telling you to get out...then you should.
If you havent done a visa run just leave...she has no legal hold over you whatsoever. |
