Unless it really annoys me, I can't be arsed. I have enough writing assigments to correct for my own students (if I see someone write "flatted" or "more safety" one more time, I'm going to eat my own finger).
I had a hard time restraining myself from correcting the clerk at Home Plus yesterday. I don't get why Koreans are taught "sir" and not "miss" or "ma'am". |

I think true errors should be corrected but so few of the errors posted on the board are real mistakes. Usually they are just mental miscues or laziness...saw it...know it is wrong...can't be bothered to change it...
I wish all those correcting would take the time...or the gain the knowledge to distinguish between real errors and simple miscues.
Correct when it impedes comprehension, otherwise leave the poster alone. |

Think of it as an opportunity to improve yourself. I'm guilty of having pointed out the odd error on occasion. If it was me, I wouldn't want to look like an arse and would want to know - especially if it was a glaring error.
Not many people care these days; in my opinion it's a sorry reflection on the standard of Western education, but then I also have to unwind a twisted telephone cable if I see it. Call me pedantic.
You may loose you're temper at me, but as an English teacher your the person you're students look up too, so you should endeavour too maintain a high standard so that students will have a good roll model, to.
Who has seen the T-shirts around the place which read, "Thats hot, Your not," or words to that effect. It's the first step to anarchy, I tell you
OK, you can flame me now. |

If people make mistakes, so be it. I think we all are stressed by the end of the day, so writing on Dave's is one of the stress-relievers we have.
By the time people get home, most would say "to hell with the standards, this is MY rant on MY time."
Why be a teacher when you don't have to?
True, we are all held to a professional level of proficiency at work. But why should we be policed while expressing our thoughts on our own time?
I think some people do it because it makes them feel superior because they can catch mistakes some people don't notice or are too drunk to notice or too tired to notice after writing their posts. It is their way of insulting a person's intellect. But thats if the person even cares about what others are correcting them about, that is.
If you correct people because of that....well......you know..... |

I think of it as an opportunity for a bunch of people to get irritated because some folks can't control the grammatical OCD that came with their English major.
How about this: Do it if you'd like. But if someone tells you to go to hell, you're not allowed whine about it, or insult back.
It seems to be the most fair solution to me. Everyone gets what they want. |

I'd be all for it. Trying to read posts littered with terrible grammar gives me a headache.
Perhaps limit it to this forum, though. |

| I'd have to agree, if you correct someone's grammar and spelling because you have no better way of contributing to the discussion, then you are a dipshi t. If however some poster has made it his business to correct someone's elses post ,while making errors in their own, then it is only proper to point out the error of his/her ways and make them look like the dipshi ts they obviously are. |

Since you asked, look at your third paragraph. It should read like this.
"You may lose (not loose your (not you're) temper at me, but as an English teacher you're (not your) the person your (not you're) students look up to (not too) so you should endeavour to (not too) maintain a high standard so that students will have a good role (not roll) model too (not to)
If you can't tell the difference between "your" and "you're" or "to" and "too" you shouldn't be talking about a high standard for English teachers. Once is just being careless, three times is ignorance.
Now I make mistakes myself, but this is basic.

Yes, but tell us where you stand on the "lose" vs. "loose" issue. |

I wasn't finished editing yet. I hit the submit button by reflex, rather than the preview button. It's a bad habit of mine.
And anyway like I said, if you spell a word once incorrectly it's not a big deal. But when it is spelled incorrectly EVERY time AND the poster talks about "high standards" THEN it should be pointed out. But just for you, I fixed it. |

Never mind the bad grammar and spelling in posts, some of you would be horrified at the multitude of spelling mistakes and even grammatical errors in job applications.
I vote for the option to have another 30 "Spelling Moderators" to correct the drunken ramblings of the Saturday morning posters. I think Ajuma could be Spelling Super-Mod. |

Well done, mate! You took the bait hook, line and sinker! My irony was a wee bit too subtle for you Do you really think I'd leave myself that wide open?
But seriously, look at it from a self-interest point of view. I used to have to sift through hundreds of resumes and decide who I was going to select for interviews. Any that had typos or bad grammar I would just dismiss out of hand. I didn't want these people representing our organisation if they didn't think grammar and spelling were important enough even for their resumes... and God forbid their lax efforts ever got exposed to our customers. I wonder how many people working in a McJob back in the West are stuck there because they never got past the resume vetting stage?
I agree that some people may get a kick out of correcting someone else's error; that it makes them feel superior somehow... for me it's just a case of not liking things that look untidy. If you had a booger on your face you'd want me to tell you, wouldn't you? You wanna walk around with a grammatical or typographical booger on your face?

Yeah, I always loved seeing resumes where the person claimed he/she pays "attention to detail" but the resume has two or three glowing typos...
All in all, it's embarrassing when I see an ESL who can't write a single grammatically correct sentence. It's bad for our industry. |
