The Jehovah witnesses, and the mormons are NOT Christians. They are a cult.

Yet, they consider themselves as Christian. So then I must ask, out of severe curiosity not animosity, who ARE christian? |
And who gets to decide if you qualify as "Christian" or not? And, who gets to decide of your "religion" is a cult?

3 : a religion regarded as unorthodox or spurious; also : its body of adherents
4 : a system for the cure of disease based on dogma set forth by its promulgator <health cults>

The full name of the Mormon Church is The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints- seems pretty Christian to me.
For me, this is beside the point. I don't want anyone pressing their beliefs on me. That includes Witnesses, Mormons, and Hare Krisnas. It is arrogant to think that I am lost somehow without what you believe. And it is disrespectful to push yourself into my life. |

In seriousness though, I do appreciate missionaries who go to third world countries to give medicine and dig wells, they are awesome humanitarians and their work should be praised. The jackasses who run around yelling about how everyone who isn't Demonination of the Second Baptist Awakening of the Blood denomination of the 1st Baptist Church of Mississippi is going to hell- yeah, they piss me off. |
Some jackasses I appreciate even less are the ones that go to third world countries and...go around knocking on doors and that's it.
I'm impressed by Jesuits though, especially the ones in Canada that invented the script for the Cree and whatnot. I think that was a Jesuit. Well, Anthony de Mello was a Jesuit and he was awesome. |

Anthony de Mello:
Quote: |
* Do you know what eternal life is? You think it's everlasting life. But your own theologians will tell you that that is crazy, because everlasting is still within time. It is time perduring forever. Eternal means timeless— no time. The human mind cannot understand that. The human mind can understand time and can deny time. What is timeless is beyond our comprehension. Yet the mystics tell us that eternity is right now. How's that for good news? It is right now. People are so distressed when I tell them to forget their past. They're crazy! Just drop it! When you hear "Repent for your past," realize it's a great religious distraction from waking up. Wake up! That's what repent means. Not "weep for your sins.": Wake up! understand, stop all the crying. Understand! Wake up!
|
Quote: |
I'm going to write a book someday and the title will be I'm an Ass, You're an Ass. That's the most liberating, wonderful thing in the world, when you openly admit you're an ass. It's wonderful. When people tell me, "You're wrong." I say, "What can you expect of an ass?" |
Quote: |
My experience is that it's precisely the ones who don't know what to do with this life who are all hot and bothered about what they are going to do with another life. |
Quote: |
Spirituality means waking up. Most people, even though they dont know it, are asleep. Theyre born asleep, they live asleep, they marry in their sleep, they breed children in their sleep, they die in their sleep without ever waking up. They never understand the loveliness and the beauty of this thing that we call human existence. You know— all mystics— Catholic, Christian, non-Christian, no matter what their theology, no matter what their religion— are unanimous on one thing: that all is well, all is well. Though everything is a mess, all is well. Strange paradox, to be sure. But, tragically, most people never get to see that all is well because they are asleep. They are having a nightmare. |
Quote: |
The genius of a composer is found in the notes of his music; but analyzing the notes will not reveal his genius. The poet's greatness is contained in his words; yet the study of his words will not disclose his inspiration. God reveals himself in creation; but scrutinize creation as minutely as you wish, you will not find God, any more than you will find the soul through careful examination of your body. |
Quote: |
To a disciple who was forever complaining about others the Master said, "If it is peace you want, seek to change yourself, not other people. It is easier to protect your feet with slippers than to carpet the whole of the earth." |
Quote: |
Any time you are with anyone or think of anyone you must say to yourself: I am dying and this person too is dying, attempting the while to experience the truth of the words you are saying. If every one of you agrees to practice this, bitterness will die out, harmony will arise. |

Being "pushy" is usually counter-productive, but canvassing and distributing religious or spiritual literature and information is not being disrespectful per se unless the preacher doesn't take "no thanks" for an answer and tries to shove it down your throat. (I think that "new converts" are often the most zealous to spread the word, and are emboldened by signs they see as portending "the end of the world")
It's understandably annoying if you keep running into views you disagree with on TV, radio, the Internet , but is that really more offensive than all the insidious advertisements, and pervasive media manipulation and propaganda that big corporate (and government) interests direct at the general public to influence our thoughts and behavior? Or is lobbying and such OK as long as it is done slickly and in the spirit of advancing gross materialism? |

Said from a hater like you, all religion is a cult to varying degrees its just easy to swallow when your in the position to hate everything that has a different view or lifestyle to your own.. |
I dont hate anyone, just trying to enlighten the expat community about the wickedness that is present.

What makes your religion the be-all and end-all, no-one, you do, and judging from your bigotted, hatefull and close minded, mod arse-kissing posts you're wrong, anyone who has the religion to be intolerant and hateful is the wrong religion period. |
It is not only my view but a heavily favored view by the general church family. Do you want me to provide a link?

I think the increase in religious posts is due to the bad moon rising and the incresed visability of socks on the washing line. |
So if someones religious beliefs are different than yours than you start yelling the "Sock" word. Good job sherlock. |

I am not pressing any beliefs on you. You are choosing to read my posts. It is you who are inserting yourself into religious discussions. I have never rang your door bell or begged you to come to church with me. |

How about if I say, "equally offensive"? |

Actually, if you follow this thread you will know that I am speaking about proselytising in general. You have certainly bugged my, but not in a religious way. |

Anyone can pretty much say what they want as far as I'm concerned. I just wish the religious posters would put a disclaimer in their first sentence so I don't waste my time reading something I'm not interested in. |
