Well done, mate! You took the bait hook, line and sinker! My irony was a wee bit too subtle for you  Do really think I'd leave myself that wide open?
But seriously, look at it from a self-interest point of view. I used to have to sift through hundreds of resumes and decide who I was going to select for interviews. Any that had typos or bad grammar I would just dismiss out of hand. I didn't want these people representing our organisation if they didn't think grammar and spelling were important enough even for their resumes... and God forbid their lax efforts ever got exposed to our customers. I wonder how many people working in a McJob back in the West are stuck there because they never got past the resume vetting stage?
I agree that some people may get a kick out of correcting someone else's error; that it makes them feel superior somehow... for me it's just a case of not liking things that look untidy. If you had a booger on you face you'd want me to tell you, wouldn't you? You wanna walk around with a grammatical or typographical booger on your face? |
Your fourth sentence should read, "Do you really think I'd leave myself that wide open?" Your second from last sentence should read, "If you had a booger on your (not you) face....." So yes, yes I do think you leave yourself that wide open.  Sorry but the irony here was just too extreme to pass up. |

You are getting better though. Only two (you) mistakes as opposed to the three in your last one. I guess my teaching is bearing fruit. Let's try for only one (you) mistake in your next post! You can do it, don't give up!  |

I agree about not correcting, at least most of the time, but I disagree about the frequency of mistakes. I see some mistakes on here that make we wonder where on Kho San Road the writer bought his or her degree.  |

NOT ME!!! My spelling is atroc....um...awful!!  I have m-w.com as the first "favorite" in my bookmarks! I can't tell you how many times I've used a different word when I can't be bothered to look up the one I can't spell. Definitely...um...Definately..Defenatly...um...REALLY NOT ME!!! |

I think of it as an opportunity for a bunch of people to get irritated because some folks can't control the grammatical OCD that came with their English major.
How about this: Do it if you'd like. But if someone tells you to go to hell, you're not allowed whine about it, or insult back.
It seems to be the most fair solution to me. Everyone gets what they want. |
Who's got an English major? Almost 80% of the people I know here have a major not even associated with Englishe. I spelt English wrong so it would pi** off some people! |
