|
|
I'm working down in this lovely city for a couple of weeks (commuting weekly from Suwon), along with a couple of Indian co-workers. And they're really suffering here (they've had vegetarian pizza from a local pizza restaurant the last two nights...).
Are there any Indian restaurants here? Or failing that, any good vegetarian restaurants or places with veggie dishes on the menu? |

There is an Indian restaurant...but I had a steak there so I doubt is authenticity, but it was close enough, for Gumi. It's shaped like a ship and used to be called "the Mayflower"...I don't remember what it's called now...or where it is exactly...but you can ask someone.
Don't confuse it with the other ship restaurant at the bottom of Gumo Mtn. (That place sucks too by the way).
You can get lots of Korean dishes without meat, like fried rice, kimchee fried rice, bibimbab (sometimes has meat but you can tell the waiter "no meat" or just pick it out), kimchee jigae (specify no meat)...etc.
I think your best bet is just to specify "no meat" when ordering.
You can say "gogi baego joolsoo-isuyo" = without meat please.
And reiterate with "yachae shikhanin saram imnida" = I am a vegetarian.
Good luck. Happy eating.
* My Korean may not be perfect, but they should understand if you say it half right* |

Thanks for your help - just to be clear this isn't for me (I'm very much an omnivore). Unfortunately some of the Indian guys don't like Korean food at all... hence why we're looking for other options.
I'll keep my eyes out for the ship. Hope we can find it! |

if you have the time, a trip to SeongSeo in Daegu would be in order. there is a great Pakistani/Indian restaurant called PAK-ASIA.
it is outside the main gate to Keimyung University. you may know the place maybe? the food is great there!!! |

yes, it's the same place, but i've never waited more than 20-30minutes. and they usually have a daily special that is readily available.
at any rate, i heard of a restaurant in Gumi that is run by a foreigner. his menu samples a wide variety of foods (indian included). give me a day to ask a friend and i'll post the name of the place here. |

That looks fantastic. Thanks!
I'm off back to Suwon tonight but I'll try it next week, without a doubt. Have passed on the details to some co-workers who are staying the weekend so maybe they'll check the place out earlier...
Cheers! |

there is also a Pasta joint called 'ITALY AND ITALY' within sight of the train station. second floor.
they allow you to choose your own noodle, sauce and toppings, so vegetarian meals are possible.
the owner has another store in daegu, so i know it's good. |

The Waegook Cook was a mixed bag - my chicken curry was very very good, but my colleague's Thai veggie curry was dry and not that tasty. Still, we'll be back.
Italy and Italy was indeed good - for anyone else trying to find it, head up the road opposite the station from the T-junction, and go round the side of the building opposite Pizza Hut (on your right as you walk away from the station). It's a little harder to find than it should be given its location. Sadly it was completely empty when I went there. I'll try it on the Indian guys this week. They might not starve after all
Thank you so much for your help! |

yeah, ITALY AND ITALY's owner is having a rough go in Gumi. Koreans aren't taking to it. In Daegu, his restaurant is always busy. |
