I need to get a computer fixed. Does anyone know where the Hewelet Packard tech repair centre is and what kind of pricing for a new hard drive for a laptop exists in Korea?

Is it cheaper to get it fixed here, do you think or send it home?

Yongsan market is where you need to go. Look for the building with the big robot as you exit the subway (via the old bus terminal and through all those tunnels). Walk past the robot building and HP central is in the (1st? 2nd?) building on your left, 1st floor.

About the hard drive: The motherboard burned out on my last HP notebook. Replacement cost $650. There is no "generic" subsitute. This from HP and all the local dealers I asked. The same is probably true of the hard drive, but it never hurts to ask around.

However... I had dust accumulation on an epic scale (you need to worry about this in Korea...worry MUCH) on the motherboard on my current HP notebook and it caused all sorts of nastiness. Not knowing what was wrong, and thinking I was being clever, I shopped around Yongsan and was told (by several shops) that I needed to replace the motherboard, and they could do it for, say, $600. Finally I took it to HP. They literally "dusted" the motherboard and everything worked fine after that. Cost? $12.

Maybe yor laptop is under waranty? If so good for you , the above post is right about where to go.

Hardisk, easy to replace it yourself. You'll pay between 60-80.000 won for a 40 gig drive.

As a side note, I posted on how to where to get a replacement cd-r/dvd rive for my compaq laptop. I got no replies, so here's an update.

Went to the Compaq service centre last Sunday...THEY WERE CLOSED in the same building mentioned by the previous poster.

Was quoted 300 US$ for a "genuine compaq" repalcement by phone . I can buy a new pc less monitor new for that.

So looked around for ages and found a second hand laptop seller. (overpriced 2nd hand I must say....400.000 for a P3), and had him put in a Samsung repalcement for 80.000 won.

God....i wish i never got a laptop. Its been reliable but I'm too scared to open it up apart from ram and harddisk upgrades.

Let us know how that works out. However, I would not recommend anyone buy a generic/Samsung/etc. hard drive or motherboard for their HP/Compaq. I've been told by sooooo many people not to do this (or simply that it's impossible). On the other hand, memory upgrades seem to work just fine. Just pop 'em in and run with it.

Diddo on the laptop woes. Crying or Very sad

Laptops other than Korean ones can be difficult to get repaired and upgraded. Korean ones are overpriced and their warranties can be worth as little as any contract in Korea, depending where you go.
But some places, like NoteKing in Sunin Plaza are really good. A trifle expensive, but they can replace or upgrade ODDs, HDDs, memory in a few minutes, depending on how many jobs-to-do are waiting at the time.
As for being scared of the thing, hell, it's just a computer. In a few years it's totally outdated (actually, it's usually outdated before you even get it), so you may as well just use it and get all you can out of it before you have to get a new one.
