Conservatives try to change the age of consent.

I personally think it should be raised to 16 or 17. What do you think?

Where I'm from (Victoria, Australia), the law recognises that young people are naturally curious about sex and shouldn't be punished for that.

You can be 10 and legally have sex with another ten year old, but no older than a 12 year old (it's two year age gap thing) and no one under 10. This 2 year age rule exists up to the age of 16. If you're 17, you just can't have sex with anyone whose care you're supposed to be in (such as a teacher, social worker etc.) even if you both consent.

Sex by the way, by it's legal definition, is not just penis/vagina or anus intercourse but includes any sexual activity from oral sex to exploring fingers, tongues, mouths and hands.

Why is the rate of STD's skyrocketing in the west amongst young people? Why has syphalis made a comeback after it had almost been obliterated from western society?

Because people like Magic Wolfman would rather not talk about sex and young people and push that ridiculas abstenance garbage on them! Thats why.

Think about it MWM, as a teeneager, 1 Sex is the most fun thing in the world 2. It is FREE! So rather then burying your head in the sand like an ignorant Christian, maybe this issue is worth a little discussion, I for one want my young cousins to be armed with facts and not religious mumbo-jumbo.

Speaking for the US, its 18 currently (ignoring the vaguries of teenagers). What do you WANT it to be? 27? 48? Late 90's? It doesn't matter anyway, teens don't exactly care about the law when there are boobs and butts out there. If we are talking in regards to paedophillia, I believe the 17-18 international standard is fair. I think Japan is a bit nuts, theirs is 13...

So what your saying is that young people having unprotected sex is the main cause of STDs? This could be fixed by lower the age of consent? Haha, what kind of logic is that. I agree education is necessary, not changing a rule so they can have sex earlier Rolling Eyes

Since we are talking about STD's. Care to look up the logistics of which group (in the west) has the highest percentage of Aids?

the problem was that, as usual, conservatives (MWM, etc) twist and lie when it comes to the subject at hand. Canada and canadians are clearly against pedophilia, we are one of the only countries in the world where if you leave and go to say Cambodia and engage in pedophilia you can be charged under canadian law.

Its funny too that conservatives love to say that if a 14 year old commits murder he should be responsible and sentenced as an adult but they can't make a choice about sex, see the the hypocrisy magicwolfman!

As for STD's we should never encourage sex amongst young people but not talking about it in a frank and open manner doesn't mean that kids won't have sex. What we have to do is educate them and make condom use MANDATORY. They should drop them from planes in my opinion.

As for HIV yes gay men are the biggest carrier however the fastest growing group getting it is YOUNG STRAIGHT WOMEN. Why? because we are not teaching our kids to use condoms, telling them only about abstinance.

And if you want to blame anyone for the HIV problems, lets talk about the Reagan Administration.

I don't follow-- who mentioned Christianity?-- aren't there enough threads about it right now? -- Christians don't uniformly believe it should be raised or lowered.

Reagan invented HIV? Not Al Gore!? Cool

Now that I've gotten my snarkiness out of the way, I don't see the practicality of raising the age of consent. (WARNING: It's only an analogy): If the age of smoking cigarettes is 18, some sixteen year olds will smoke. But if the age of cigarettes is raised to 25, there will be so many people who feel that the law is arbitrary and unreasonable that all compliance is undermined, and soon 12 year olds are smoking. The same will happen if sexual consent is raised; rather than people between 13 and 16 thinking the law is an invasion, a larger demographic thinks the law is an invasion.

Sometimes (not always) laws are a matter of winning over public support. For example, the record com
